Whole Point: missed, and badly

What we should be asking is, who the hell cares.

(CNSNews.com) – “Where’s Pete Buttigieg?” a growing number of politicians and pundits are asking.

Buttigieg, President Biden’s transportation secretary, hasn’t had much, if anything, to say about the disruptive, multi-day Southwest Airlines flight cancellations that have stranded thousands of passengers; or the nation’s supply chain logjam, where dozens of container ships wait off the California coast for the opportunity to unload. The backlog is partly blamed on a shortage of trucks/drivers to pick up and return the shipping containers.

“The supply chain disruption is a crisis,” Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) tweeted on Monday. “This will impact every American, especially those who can least afford it. It’s past time for President Biden and Pete Buttigieg to explain what they’re doing about this.”

In a second tweet, Cotton said: “Pete Buttigieg was completely unqualified to serve as Secretary of Transportation. But Biden still picked him. Now, Pete is absent during a transportation crisis that is hurting working-class Americans.”

Heavens to Murgatroid, is there NO ONE who can save us?

STRONG HINT: If you sincerely consider yourself a Constitutionally-literate conservative, yet your first thought whenever a problem rears its ugly head is to demand that government step in and fix it—particularly when THE FUCKING PROBLEM WAS CREATED ENTIRELY BY GOVERNMENT IN THE FIRST GODDAMNED PLACE—then you are DEFINITELY Doing It Wrong, and should rethink a few things.

Yes, yes, hoisting new mom Pete Buttplug on xhwyrmmzz’s own Big Government petard might offer some small, transitory entertainment value. I get that, I really do. Nonetheless, Cotton’s kneejerk demand to be told “what they’re doing about this” rather than calling attention to the conspicuous absence of any grant of Constitutional authority for FederalGovCo to be micromanaging the supply chain, the trucker shortage, or the economy itself illustrates just how far Left the Overton window has been pushed. The widespread assumption that there’s a proper federal role to be played in addressing each and every issue says a lot about how very far afield we’ve strayed from our Founding ideals, none of it good.

  1. As though butthead knows anything about anything. But save us please petey.
The only solution to almost every problem is the same: get the damn corrupt communist government out of the way.

  2. STRONG HINT: If you sincerely consider yourself a Constitutionally-literate conservative, yet your first thought whenever a problem rears its ugly head is to demand that government step in and fix it—

Then you’re not a Constitutionally literate conservative, or really any kind of a conservative at all.

  3. check this, from a friend in California – “The NEWS says the California port situation is caused by a driver shortage.
Not so fast: It is in part caused by a California Truck Ban which says all trucks must be 2011 or newer and a law called AB 5 which prohibits Owner Operators.
Traditionally the ports have been served by Owner Operators (non union). California has now banned Owner Operators.
Long term, truckers in California are not investing in new trucks because California has a law that makes them illegal in 2035. The requirement is to purchase electric trucks which do not exist.
And in the words of Paul Harvey, “Now you know the rest of the story”
    BUSINESS
CARB to begin blocking certain trucks’ DMV registrations in 2020
Carriers domiciled in California with trucks older than 2011 model, or using engines manufactured before 2010, will need to meet the Board’s new Truck and Bus Regulation beginning in 2020 or their vehicles will be blocked from registration with the state’s DMV, the state has said.
The new “health-based requirements” will need to be met before a driver is allowed to register his or her truck through the Department of Motor Vehicles, CARB says. A new enforcement tool used by the DMV beginning in 2020 will automatically block 2010 and older trucks from registration.”

    1. BINGO, hh. Got it in one. And more irksome yet, those new trucks you’re required to buy? They break down way more than they actually run, thanks to the beyond-belief EPA-mandated emissions crap choking them right out of service and off the damned road. You oughta hear my brother go on about REGEN in particular, it’s a sight to see, what with all the arm-waving, fist-shaking, table-pounding, and face-purpling that goes on. I’ve mentioned that whole mess a time or two before here, I believe, but the gist of it is…well, I think I need to do a post on it, actually.

      1. Isn’t the ethanol content requirements in CA also very rough on engines? Or is that not a factor with truck engines? Do they allow Diesel in CA?

        1. Not a factor in diesel engines, which is what the trucks under discussion are powered by.

All big trucks are diesel. And the ever changing rules to clean up the diesel emissions create havoc until the manufacturers find out how to make the changes work reliably.

          1. Yep. The much-hyped electric semi is vaporware, basically. Even if someone built it, it would not be economical to operate. Big trucks are siable investments, and to get a decent return on the cost they need to be moving. Stopping frquently for a hour-plus each time to recharge the batteries is never going to make sense for an operator.

There is also the limited lifespan of the batteries to consider. The sizable expense of replacing the entire battery pack every couple years has to be factored in as an operating cost.

So even if someone builds such a truck, no one is going to want to buy it. It can not compete on price, operating cost, or up time. The green lunatics running California can demand it, but doing so will just result in a shortage of actual working trucks. Which was are now seeing.
