As I’m sure you all know, Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins passed last year, probably the victim of an OD, after years of struggling with heroin addiction. So marvel as his 16 year old son (!) shows off badass, hard-hitting chops that almost have to be coded in his family’s DNA.
Yep, a hard-hitter for sure, just like the old man. Not my favorite Foo Fighters tune, unfortunately; myself, I wish they’d done “Monkeywrench,” but what the hey. As WeirdDave says:
Not only does he absolutely nail it, I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a drummer play with such emotion. His anger, pain, rage and yes, love could be bagged and sold. The subtle support he’s getting from the rest of the band, “We got you buddy. You’re with family”, take the performance to another level. I’m not even a Foo Fighters fan, but this one put tears in my eyes.
I won’t go quite as far as all that, but it’s certainly something to see nonetheless.
Update! Just now thought to check it, and lo and behold, the BPs video link I left for Aesop in the comments was bad. Fixed now, sorry ‘bout that.
Awesome.
I hope that kid’s got a bright future ahead of him; he’s definitely got a leg up.
When I was teaching myself to drum, if you don’t need a towel after a practice, you’re not playing hard enough.
Heh. You sound like my kind of drummer, Ace. The BPs drummer, my cousin Mark, pounded them skins so hard we had to crank the guitars WAY up just to hear ourselves over him. Which, hey, didn’t bother me in the least; I encouraged him to keep right on slamming ’em just that way, not to ever let up regardless of what anybody might have to say about it.
Somewhere around here I have the vid of a movie-premiere party we played in NYC, a flick in which we had seven songs on the soundtrack. It exhibits Mark at his absolute purple-faced, sweaty best, bringing his snare arm down from WAAAY above his head each stroke. I need to FTP part of that up on Ye Olde CF Server sometime and send you a link to it, it truly is a wonder to behold.
Sound men/women/whatever would get upset about how loud we were and how poorly we took direction from them, but so fucking what? I always just told ’em, look, we have our stage volume dialed in, you just do what you gotta do to make it sound good front of house, aiight? If that means taking everything out of the mix except vocals, well, we’re good with that.
Well, except for this one chick at Bottom Of The Hill in San Francisco; she had the system cranked up so loud at soundcheck the subs under the front of the stage were vibrating my feet. Once the show started, I figured she’d dial it back a hair or three, but noooo: when I looked back to the mixing board during the second song, she was out in the aisle dancing like a mad thing.
Best sound man/woman/whatever we ever had the pleasure of working with, IMNSHO. Fountains of Wayne were on that show too, if I remember right. Their guitarist bummed a 9-volt battery off me for one of his effects pedals and then never gave it back after the show, the sorry bastige.
Promise made, promise kept: the aforementioned movie-premiere-party footage can be viewed here:

Let me know if it doesn’t work for ya. The black kid in the interview footage at the beginning just wandered up, leading to my little ad-lib joking around, and the girl you can hear laughing at my tomfoolery is my then-gf Jennifer.
Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!
Played just fine.
I’d have to practice a bit to get the snare rolls in there that tight on the first one.
What was he playing, 1/64th notes??
A guy I knew called that M-60 time: “Imagine you’re a machine gun…”
The kid plays like a full grown experienced adult outstanding
I never really got into Foo Fighters. Maybe I should give them a listen.
Oh, they’re an excellent band, kenny. Check this out:

See if that ain’t like mother used to make. I’m not real big on their more poppy-sounding hits, but when they rock, they rock HARD. Dave Grohl, in addition to being an incredible drummer (the guy who really MADE Nirvana, they were nowhere until he came along), is an excellent guitarist too. With Taylor Hawkins and Pat Smear thrown in, what’s not to like?
I probably missed a lot of what they did because of work and then in Hong Kong they weren’t big. I’ll give that link a listen later.
It’d be nice to get into something new for a change.
Don’t get down on the pop-ier stuff.
You just have to get a good back up band.
Like 1000 of them.

Drummers, alone: I count about 136 or so.
