I see the Navy has released it’s findings on the collision suffered by the USS Connecticut, a Seawolf class fast attack submarine.
The Navy says it was an uncharted seamount (mountain) that the sub ran into. I see the usual ignorance around the net about how a submarine operates in quiet mode.
For the uneducated, this is simple. An attack submarine is almost exclusively operating in the quiet, meaning it is literally flying blind. Navigation is by charts and those charts often have holes in the information. Submarine position is kept by inertial guidance systems, gyros, that chart the position of the submarine. Active sonar is NOT being used as it is a dead giveaway to the subs position. The submarine is completely blind.
It is understood that the USA has the best seabed charts in the world, but they are not perfect. If you are in a submarine and an unknown underwater obstacle is in your path – you WILL hit it.
Trying to extrapolate an unfortunate incident like this to a declaration that our Navy is faulty is just the province of the mighty ignorant.
Incidents like this happen and go unreported as a true part of our national security. Some are too difficult to hide, like this one, due to the amount of damage.
Thank you for the explanation. This is the first I’ve seen that explains exactly how this could happen without “fault”: a true accident.
It is so tempting to assume that everything on this earth has been mapped and measured. But it hasn’t. And the seabed remains mostly uncharted territory.
There could still be fault of course. The sub could have been in the wrong place for example, or in a zone declared unknown. Unlikely, but there are possibility’s. My guess, and that is all it is because national security is not going to give all the details, they were where they were supposed to be and hit the unknowable. It happens and you never hear about it because it’s a minor blow and goes unreported to the media.
If you are a pilot, you probably received training in flying blind with only your airspeed, altimeter, and attitude indicators to guide you along with your chart and stopwatch. Imagine having something very similar but with charts that may be incomplete, say having the Rocky Mountain range left off the map…
I see that the Commander, Lt. Commander, and Master Chief sonar technician have been relieved of command.
For what reason we are not told. So, perhaps they were not following the correct procedures for their mission. Since the Master Sonar technician was also relieved, I’d suspect something in that area.
