As y’all know, I stopped with the Eyrie-promo posts here a long while back; in all that time, this makes only the second exception to that general rule to date. I truly feel that tonight’s topic is important enough, enheartening enough, inspiring enough, to implore CF Lifers who may not also be Eyrregulars to check it out. The usual paying-customer requirement for commenting has been waived as well, so you know I ain’t playing around here. Don’t miss this one, folks; it’ll restore your faith in humanity, put a smile on your face, a song in your heart, and a spring in your step. This story really is that good, I promise.

Eyrie up!

I discontinued these announcements a goodish while back, primarily just to find out if the Eyrie adjunct would be able to stand on its own without further promotion from hereabouts. But tonight’s edition discusses a topic I feel important enough, enraging enough, alarming enough to resurrect the grand old Eyrie Up tradition just this once. The piece centers on a Mark Steyn column which is downright chilling as regards both the damning details and the larger implications. A small taste:

In June, in the Northern District of California, something rather unusual happened: the defendants actually beat the rap. They were two British subjects – Mike Lynch and Stephen Chamberlain, respectively the founder and finance honcho of a UK company called Autonomy. In 2018 the dirty stinkin’ rotten corrupt US Department of Justice had indicted the pair for “conspiracy” and “fraud” over the company’s sale to Hewlett Packard – and, after some protracted Julian Assange-like extradition jousting, the two were put on a ‘plane to America and placed under house arrest.

And then on June 6th a San Francisco jury found Lynch and Chamberlain not guilty of all charges. On July 28th, back in Britain, Mr Lynch gave his first interview about his ordeal:

Cleared UK tech tycoon feared he would die in US jail if convicted

Less than a month later, he is dead. To celebrate his acquittal, he took a party of friends and family (including his trial attorney Christopher Morvillo) on a Mediterranean cruise, and on Monday his luxury yacht sank off Sicily.

Must be pretty sad for his co-defendant, right?

Well, no. Because he’s dead too. On Saturday Stephen Robinson went for his morning run in Cambridgeshire and, six miles into it, was hit by a car. He was pronounced dead on Monday – the same day Mike Lynch died.

Free for all brawl

Over at the Eyrie, that is, where I just put up a notification for Eyrregulars of my decision yesterday to lay out of work there until Screamin’ meemie Monday rears its ugly head. As compensation for the stress and heartbroken agony brought on by Ye Aulde Blogge Hoste’s absence, comments to the notification-post have been enabled for everybody, irrespective of subscriber status. So enjoy yourselves, folks; whatever y’all feel like posting, on whatever topic you feel like sounding off about, is now do-able at there Eyrie without restriction, censorship, or any other interference from me. The house is open, so have it at, party hearty, and don’t worry about leaving a mess on the rug.

Smelling anything yet?

The Steyn column I quoted in my belated Eyrie post is astute enough to warrant a mention here as well, I believe. To wit:

So what’s going on? Why did whoever’s running the show allow this to happen?

As my former GB News colleague Neil Oliver observed long ago on The Mark Steyn Show, formulating a useful rule of contemporary politics:

This is happening because they want it to happen.

It’s important to bear in mind that there is no rational justification for this sudden “panic”. The squinting croaking zombie has been out of it for almost his entire “presidency”: at the G7 and the like, it’s accepted by every other nation that he will play no part in meaningful discussions and attend only one or two of the photo-ops, at which Meloni or Macron will be alerted to steer him back to the podium should he wander off because a comely six-year-old daughter of a deputy-assistant-under-commissioner of EU paper-shuffling has caught his eye.

And what’s the net result of all that? Right now the non-dead candidate of the opposition party is one-point-five points ahead in the Real Clear Politics poll of polls – and that’s well within the Democrats’ margin of fraud when the late-arriving ballots start being motored around in unmarked vans in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

In other words, an amazingly solid core of American voters are either ignorant of or relaxed about the prospect of Second Term at Bernie’s. Will this debate seriously shift those numbers?

The guys running this soap opera know the ending they’re working up to, and any unexpected plot twists en route are designed to serve that end.

Yep. In the words with which I close the Eyrie post:

Indeed so. If there’s anything the last four years ought to have taught us, it’s the essential, incontrovertible truth of Mark’s closing statement. Whether we wish to acknowledge it or not, there’s a lot more going on here than meets the eye.

And there you have it.

If the foul, fishy stench of this whole setup hasn’t yet reached your nose, you need to take a good, long whiff.

Eyrie up!

I stopped doing these bi-weekly Eyrie reminder posts a while back, preferring to let the Substack hang sink or swim on its own. So far, it’s worked out nicely enough with just the link in the Donnybrook post for promo. But I feel tonight’s Eyrie post is really something special, enough so to induce Ye Humble Aulde Blogghoste to call a little main-page CF Muthaship attention to it.

Entitled “Courage, heroism, persistence: what they REALLY look like,” the topic is MSGT Roy Benavidez, of whom, when Reagan hung the MoH around his neck back in ’81 for some truly astonishing exploits on 2 May 1968 as a fighting Green Beret so-jer serving in Vietnam, had this to say: “If the story of his heroism were a movie script, you would not believe it.”

As per his usual wont, Ronnie was exactly, precisely correct about that; just hit the Eyrie link, then carry on from my brief excerpt and commentary to the original article and see if you don’t agree. Since somebody or other (a-HENH!) brought up my commentary just now, here’s a wee dram just to give you the overall flavor.

It’s to our immense cost that, in an age when the words “duty,” “honor,” and “sacrifice” have become dirty words, the concept of “masculinity” itself reduced to little more than a punchline, America seems incapable of producing doughty, indomitable men like MSGT Benavidez anymore. There were precious few of them to begin with, and we’ll always need as many of them as we can possibly get.

That, too, is just true as all git-out. Now go looky, peeps. Subscribe, share, pay-sub to comment, all the usual foofaraw.

Working on tonight’s Eyrie post and hoooo BOY, it’s gonna be a good ‘un. Not actually going to require a whole hell of a lot of commentary from me, but still. Updates as and when; I’m genuinely excited about this one, folks, no kidding. The source material really is that damned good.

Update! She’s up at last; hats off to our esteemed compadre Aesop for what just about has to be his finest long-form essay ever, which is the basis and inspiration for today’s Eyrie outing. If this one doesn’t generate at least one or two paid Eyrie subs, well jeez, people, I just don’t know what more I can do. A-HENH!

Hot DOG!

SO, this week’s Screamin’ meemie Monday! post over at the Eyrie surpassed all previous records for page-views, and not by just a little bit, either. Nearly doubled the usual hit count, in fact. Many, many thanks to all you readers and subscribers for that signal achievement, both noob and old-salt alike.

I’m humbled and grateful for how successful you’ve made this little side-venture of mine, particularly the slowly growing handful that felt it was worth succumbing to my piteous beseechments to take out a paid Eyrie sub at whatever price-point.

As I’ve recounted many times over lo, these many years: just when I get to feeling underappreciated, burned out, and tired of the whole thing—caught up in a writerly death-spiral which in turn leads me to seriously consider giving this whole futile web-logging schtick up and walking away for good—that’s always when some unlooked-for, out-of-the-blue something like this comes along to boost my flagging spirits, restoring my determination to keep chugging away at it for a little while longer.

Sincerest thanks again to one and all for making both CF and the Eyrie what they are. To my way of thinking, both my prized little online hogwallows are unique in all of website-dom, with their own special atmosphere, attitude, and style; certainly, I’ve yet to come across any other quite like ‘em out there. Over time, CF especially has developed a flavor distinctly its own—spicy, pungent, with a good, hard kick to it—although admittedly it won’t satisfy every taste. Which, frankly, suits me just fine; in fact, if it DID I’d fret about what I was doing wrong.

I’m very proud of the two Innarnuts spaces I’ve created, and derive YUUUUGE satisfaction from the building, running, and managing of them. I do wish Substack offered more options for customization, functionality (no YewToob/Twatter embeds, guys? SRSLY?) and tweaking the design of the Eyrie. Oh well, maybe someday.

Ultimately, though, whatever I may or may not get myself up to behind the curtains amounts to an exercise in pointless onanism; it’s the readers who truly bring a blog to life, if it is to have one. Without you folks regularly checking in; reading; commenting; emailing me links to potential blog-fodder articles; donating and/or subscribing, there really would be no reason to do this at all.

Owing to having to pick up the young ‘un for the weekend after an extended concert-band rehearsal, then grinding and hacking my way through preposterous rush-hour traffic to get us home, I got a way-late start on tonight’s Eyrie post. After mulling over putting the whole thing off until tomorrow, I ended up deciding to make it a really short but nonetheless sweet rip on the recycling scam instead. Humble apologies for the delay and the brevity, Eyrieans.
