Well, glad to see the site back up to a functional level. I have no idea why comments cannot be kept while keeping out malicious marxists but it sure seems a shame.
A shame it most certainly is, Barr. As my grandma Hubbard used to say, “can’t have nothin’ no more.” I’ve had to look over my shoulder ever since the notorious Rooskie hack several years back that cost me 18 years’ worth of archives, and it’s extremely wearisome at BEST.
As I mentioned elsewhere, open comments–one of the primary rationales for these newfangled blog thingamaboogers to even exist at all–is the biggest security issue among a whole passel of others, alas. I had hoped and assumed that issue had been sufficiently addressed with the implementation of the “Approve New Users” plugin a cpl-three years back, but as the last couple of weeks have demonstrated, no such luck.
Further thoughts: as is universally acknowledged amongst longtime blog purveyors, the comments-section problem is even worse with WP blogs than others like, say, Google/Blogspot. Then again, Blogspot blogs have their own serious issues, censorship and summary deleting of entire posts for the “crime” of ReichWingNaziDeathBeast Badthink being foremost among those. Like everything else in life, I guess, it’s a trade-off.

I was going to put in an image but can’t. I see some of the other comments about broken commenting, so I must assume that this is yet more of the disaster brought about by Musk and the DOGE nerds.
