Building the O!gulags, one small brick at a time

If you had any doubt about whether the Left’s erstwhile rallying cry (and manufactured Jefferson quote) “dissent is the highest form of patriotism” was ever anything more than a self-serving bit of sloganeering, not worth the simple chronic halitosis they expelled to mewl it, wonder no more. This is what dissent in Obama’s New Soviet Socialist Republic of Amerika will get you:

An Oklahoma City police officer wrongly pulled over a man last week and confiscated an anti-President Barack Obama sign the man had on his vehicle.

Harrison said he later received a call from a person who said he was a lieutenant supervisor for the Internal Investigations Department and wanted to know his location and return his sign to him.

According to Harrison, the supervisor said the Secret Service had been contacted on the matter and had told them the sign was not a threat to the president.

…But his run-in with the law wasn’t over yet.

“The Secret Service called and said they were at my house,” Harrison said.

“When I was on my way there, the Secret Service called me and said they weren’t going to ransack my house or anything…they just wanted to (walk through the house) and make sure I wasn’t a part of any hate groups.”

Expect plenty more of this — and also expect not to hear one solitary peep from any of those once-ubiquitous liberal free-speech advocates, who only complain about stifling of dissent when the “threat” is imaginary, and there’s no real danger to their yellow hides at all.

Harrison said he feels his First Amendment rights were violated.

Oh, they most assuredly were. But in Obamerika, you have no rights, liberty is an illusion, and the Constitution but a fondly-remembered dream.

I ought to add here that the good Captain McCool’s response was perfectly reasonable and appropriate. But it’s little overreaches like this one that are the first steps down the dangerous road the Messiah’s liberal-fascist zealots wish us to tread.

  1. The SS showed up at his house. For a bumper sticker of all things. It seems the one’s close minions are doing anything to deep the rest of us down. Should the SS show at my doorstep they will be told to leave. Not asked, told. When they fail to do so, I will have them charged with trespassing.

  2. Hey Mike, any comment from the ACLU? I mean, isn’t this kinda thing right up their ally?

Oh wait, you just said liberty is an illusion. My bad.

  3. 42 USC Sec. 1983. Civil Action for Deprivation of Rights.

Every person who, under color of any statute, ordinance, regulation, custom, or usage, of any State or Territory or the District of Columbia, subjects, or causes to be subjected, any citizen of the United States or other person within the jurisdiction thereof to the deprivation of any rights, privileges, or immunities secured by the Constitution and laws, shall be liable to the party injured in an action at law, suit in equity, or other proper proceeding for redress, except that in any action brought against a judicial officer for an act or omission taken in such officer’s judicial capacity, injunctive relief shall not be granted unless a declaratory decree was violated or declaratory relief was unavailable. For the purposes of this section, any Act of Congress applicable exclusively to the District of Columbia shall be considered to be a statute of the District of Columbia.

It provides for a civil lawsuit against a person acting under color of state law (say a police officer) who acts to deprive another of his civil rights (say free speech). Yes, it is real, and yes, there are a LOT of cases on it. Note in the article that the police department contacted the driver to return the sign. The officer is in trouble in the department, and the department knows what trouble.

The Secret Service is hyper-protective of a president; while I don’t agree with their actions, I understand their actions, and I understand their motivations. They are going to talk to the driver, and if they didn’t…let me just say that I expect them to do that.

The CF comments section is pretty free-form and rough and tumble; tolerance level for rowdiness and misbehavior is fairly high here, but is NOT without limit. Conduct yourself with the merest modicum of decorum, courtesy, and respect and you'll be fine. Pick pointless squabbles with other commenters, fling provocative personal insults, issue threats, or annoy the host (me) won't.

Should you find yourself sanctioned after running afoul of the CF comments policy as stated and feel you have been wronged, please download and complete the Butthurt Report form below in quadruplicate; retain one copy for your personal records and send the others to the email address posted in the right sidebar.
