Unbridgeable chasm

August 1st, 2008

So some professional-victim grievance pimps heckled the Redeemer at a town-hall event; he eventually got them to shut the hell up — no mean feat, that — while he spoke. And then:

Per NBC’s Lauren Appelbaum, Obama eventually took a question from one of these protestors. Here’s the exchange:
Obama: I’m going to call on these young men. Just one of you. All right? And remember, I made a promise to you. But also I want you to give your mike back after you ask your question or make your comment.

Protestor: So my question is: In the face of the numerous attacks that are made against the African community or the black community, by the same US government that you aspire to lead — and we are talking about attacks like the subprime mortgage that you spoke of — it wasn’t just a general ambiguous kind of phenomena, a phenomena that targeted the African community and Latino community, attacks like the killing of Sean Bell by the New York police department and right here in St. Petersburg by the St. Petersburg police, and Jena 6 and Hurricane Katrina, and the list goes on. In the face of all these attacks that are clearly being made on the African community, why is it that you have not had the ability to not one time speak to the interests and even speak on the behalf of the oppressed and exploited African community or black community in this country?

Obama: Well, I, ah, I guess, I…Hold on a second, everybody. I want everybody to be respectful. That’s why we are having a town hall meeting. That’s democracy at work. And he asked a legitimate question, so I want to give him an answer.

No, he did no such thing. The idiotic radical premises underlying the question are unleavened balderdash, based on moonbat conspiracy theories, paranoia, and, frankly, plain old horseshit. The speaker is an obnoxious dolt, and his kind of “thinking” deserves no more respect than any other repulsive thing you might disgustedly scrape off the bottom of your shoe. Or, say, a Congressman.

There is no use even trying to argue with people like this, any more than there is to try to convince a head-chopping Muslim fanatic of the value of individual liberty and tolerance for the viewpoints of others, or a Nutroots blog-blatherskite that Republicans don’t actually slaughter and eat poor minority children. They just aren’t listening, and they never will be; they’re unpersuadable on any point that conflicts with their fossilized prejudices, and it’s just not worth a moment’s bother. They’re basically treading water on a river of rhetorical bullshit whose current will never be reversed, nor its depths measured — and any intellectual life preserver you try to throw them will be contemptuously batted away.

Update! Captain Ed catches the nuance, but falls victim himself to the “bungled” Katrina response lie. I don’t know why he bothered, honestly. Like teaching a pig to sing.
