A thousand words
Best. Political cartoon. EVER.

Really says it all, don’t it?
Update! I should maybe point out that I myself would have put “radical Islam” up there instead of just “Islam.” But given poll after poll showing overwhelming support on the part of the Muslim world for sharia, violent jihad, and their overall antipathy to Western culture, I can’t honestly say I find Devareaux’s generalization all that bothersome.

Islam may or may not be the problem, the increasing unpopularity of the Muslim-murdering Al Qaida and the apparent unwillingness of a billion or so Muslims to take up arms against the west tends to make me think it isn't the biggest problem; radical Islam (how big is the radical chunk of Islam?) definitely is a major causative factor in the problem. I don't exactly believe All Jizz and other left-media polls showing universal hatred of the U.S. among Muslims - there should be a lot more trouble if the depth & breadth of hatred is as significant as reported by our left-leaning media pals. Moreover, the willingness of Western leftist multiculturalists to flog even the most outrageous accommodations of the most radical versions of Islam, is a major contributing factor to our problems. The Canadian human rights kangaroo court prosecution of Mark Steyn's printing the words of radical clerics - no more no less - is a good example. Increasingly, radical Islam is a club with which the multi-culti left can bludgeon the west. Both the radicals and the left attempt to take advantage of our inherent decency. The leftist rot in our culture is just as big of a problem; it is probably more immediate because the leftists have much easier access to our institutions (and thus can destroy them more efficiently) than the death cultists.
There's also the matter of tribal people generally. Recent problems involving Somali Muslims have come to light in the press, which some like Andy McCarthy are quick to attribute to Islam, but most Somalis are nominal Muslims. A lot of vets who have served in Somalia will have a few piquant terms describing the perceived national character of Somalis. So I think a lot of the problem is more tribal-related than religion related, though it's hard to tell how the two factors interact and how much one affects the other or acts as a catalyst for the other. Are you dealing with a tribal-mentality developing world asshole, or a religious lunatic, or a combination of the two? Then you look at a guy like the fellow who tried to murder a restaurant full of people in England today, and you find out the guy is mentally ill, and was recruited and radicalized, probably by the usual ethnic Pakistani British nationals / residents with loose AQ ties that the British have handled with kid gloves for so many years - Blair started getting tough on them but Brown is now giving signals that he is reverting to traditional leftist multi-culti posture.
This is going to be a more confusing, drawn out fight than people have bargained for. If only we didn't have to fight a cultural civil war against the leftist insurgency at the same time.
