Just When You Thought it Was Safe to Go Into the Water…

May 24th, 2006

Turns out, according to ABC, Dennis Hastert, Republican Speaker of the House, may be one of the targets of the anti-corruption investigation into Jack Abramoff’s crooked operation.

Maybe this explains why he was shocked, simply shocked (and outraged too!) that the FBI raided the Capitol Hill office of Rep. Jefferson (D/Your Telecom Name Here).

Separation of powers, my butt. Why is it, again, we need to work to keep the Republicans in power in Washington? H/t to Bill Quick. Others have raised the question why a Republican, fighting off allegations of “culture of corruption,” would go all out to provide cover for a seemingly very corrupt Democrat. You might even say it’s stupid.

[Update: Hastert and DOJ now claim Hastert isn't the target of any investigations. Which makes Hastert's outrage even more inexplicable.]

Turns out that Blunt, the interim speaker, had had dealings with Abramoff, as well. Money must flow like water in DC. However, I've read where he actually has given more money to Democrats. Could get really interesting.

We should force all of congress to forfeit their pay, and just live off of what they can steal.

Yeah, but it would be a violation of separation of powers to make them pay taxes on their bribes.

And it's a violation of their freedom of speech for commoners to criticize them.

Indeed, Murel. That's the whole point of Campaign Finance Reform, and why it almost got extended to blogs.

The outrage is very understandable if he is not actually under investigation, with an election coming up. Would you like to be running for office and have news folks saying all kinds of nasty stuff that you never did but saying it anyway and repeatedly?

I understand that, Dave, but why the hell is he defending Jefferson?
