A real breakthrough

April 21st, 2004

Plenty of you have asked me about running the Day By Day strip vertically, thinking that there was some scripting magic involved in the way I did it. Alas, my poor brain is far too cluttered with snippets of songs I wrote ten years ago and promptly forgot about, images of Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly dancing seductively around my bed in a sheer leotard, and daydreams of myself living in New Orleans and playing piano like Fats Waller all struggling for primacy of place in my narrow stream of cognition for me to have been able to come up with such a thing; plus, the thing is, I’m a moron. I was doing it the old-fashioned way: download each day’s strip, Photoshop it, and upload it to the server. This little peek behind the curtain revealed me as something other than a real wizard and thereby disappointed more than one of you, but aside from making the templates I used available for download there was little I could do about it.

Well, that’s all changed now. Mark of Tempus Fugit is a far smarter fellow than I’ll ever be, and has come up with a PHP script that’s chock full of rich buttery goodness and that automates the entire thing, complete with a comprehensive set of instructions that even a mouth-breathing dullard like myself ought to be able to grasp. I’ll be implementing it this weekend, or so I hope – the band has a show and Joe’s coming down a day early for the festivities, so my mind might be kind of….elsewhere. But I’ll be setting it up as soon as I get a minute (assuming I’m not spending it hanging around here writing vile screeds calling for Salem-style witch trials for ex- and neo-hippies), and if this sounds like just the pill to cure your DBD ills, you can too. Be sure to thank Mark for his fine work. I did.

A reel geek never does a job by hand that takes 30 seconds when he can spend 20 hours working up a script to do it for him!

Hey, in the end it more than pays for itself! ;)

Dimly, I grasp at the wonders Mark has done. All that scripting stuff is black magic to me; it's all I can do to upload toons to the ftp? site.

    Oot.
