Remember all those breathless denunciations of Bush for “politicizing the Justice Department”–and those square-jawed promises that such crimes would never be allowed in the New City of Light? Well, with Obama’s approval, Eric Holder has just overruled his own department just as he did for Bill Clinton in the Marc Rich pardon sale.
Professionals at Justice told Holder in no uncertain terms that creating a House seat for D.C. was unconstitutional except by constitutional amendment, an effort which already failed. But rather than accepting that outcome, Holder and Obama have decided to treat the Constitution as optional.
For politicians like Holder and Obama, if it stands in the way of their acquisition of power, it must give way. Funny; both soldiers and politicians swear an oath to the Constitution. Yet when soldiers ignore their oath, it’s called a “junta”–but when politicians ignore their oath, it’s just…”business as usual”?
If DC residents want representation in Congress, the answer is retrocession into Maryland. That already happened with the Virginia side of the District. But this isn’t about the residents of DC–it’s about Packing the Legislature.
If DC is “entitled” to a repesentative without being a state, then so are Puerto Rico, Guam, Somoa, my living room, etc., etc. And if they are entiled to a representative , they are also entitled to two senators. And with the exception of my living room, almost all of those new lawmakers would likely be Democrats.
This is just another anti-, de-, dis- and un-constitutional power-grab by a control freak administration that has sworn an oath to the Constitution, but in reality only defends their own raw political thievery.
Or as James Madison put it, “Marc Rich For Congress ‘09!”
