Israel implements unilateral ceasefire; Hamas attacks continue
Update! The Real (Conservative) McCain:
The timing of the ceasefire — two days before Obama’s inauguration — tends to confirm my original gut-hunch feeling that the Gaza war was Israel deciding to give Hamas a good ass-whupping before the beginning of a U.S. administration that Israeli leaders view as pro-Palestinian.
Which is not quite the same as “I question the timing,” however. I’m not suggesting anything conspiratorial, just summarizing the most obvious geopolitical considerations involved. And, yes, “ass-whupping” is a phrase you don’t see often enough in discussions of geopolitical strategy.
Agreed — on all points. Especially that last. Most especially that last — and with Hillary’s “smart weak power” approach to foreign policy, we won’t be seeing much of it from here on out, either.
Israel’s leadership knew full well that with anti-Israel terrorist sympathizers ruling their most reliable ally after January 20th, they’d better act quickly. Seems obvious enough — and logical enough. I just hope the ass-whupping was thorough enough to keep Hamas down for the next four — or eight, or twelve, or thirty — years. Because they won’t get another chance like this one.
