Well, folks, t’is the first day of the first ever (and hopefully last) CF Begathon. Can you FEEL the excitement in the air? The backstory that necessitates this appalling and embarrassing turn of events is here and here. Already got a couple hundred bucks’ worth of donations over the weekend, in advance of the Begathon’s official kick-off; thanks so very much for that. I can’t begin to tell you how much it’s appreciated. Also went out and got myself one of these on Saturday, too, so with any luck we won’t be having any more catastrophes like this last one.

You can donate if you wish by clicking on the PayPal button below or in the right sidebar. This post will remain at the top for the rest of the week, or until I scrounge enough to replace the toasted iMac, whichever comes first. Thanks again to all of you for your generosity, and for dropping by ye olde weblog in the first place.

Update! Bill points out a most regrettable typo in the title, which I fixed, and will forevermore swear never happened.

Updated update! The response so far has been fantastic. I’ll be e-mailing my thanks to each of you who have donated individually, of course, but until I have a chance to do so, please accept a blanket expression of my gratitude here. You guys are terrific, and I appreciate your concern and generosity more than I could ever adequately express.

I tried to send twice but PayPal gave me some guff about putting in something other than zero (which I didn't).

Don't know about that, but I hope it arrives. If it doesn't, let me know and I'll give it another shot.

Mikey- I was having a bit of trouble with that too, then my peabrain realized that you type in your amount, then click on "update total". Took me a couple of tries before I grokked that. Of course, that's when my password stated to give me heartburn.

I have a working and populated mini-atx motherboard, a matched copy of WinXP, and a 300 gig sata drive + controller ( with said copy of WinXP on it ) just sitting in a drawer, and a 17" LCD monitor that is surplus.

If you can scrounge a case and power supply, you could be up immediately.

Would you like to have me mail it?

Oh, and you don't have to use windoze ... LINUX or a Darwin/OSX install would probably work.

( correction: a MICRO-ATX motherboard ... although it will probably fit in any ATX case, just lots of unused space inside ... )

Thanks very much for the offer, Kristopher. I spoke with my friend Jeremy last week about running just such a setup, though -- he being my local favorite computer guru -- and he strongly discouraged me from doing it. It has to be the Mac OS for work purposes, and Jeremy says that while it is indeed doable, it's an open invitation for Driver Hell (as he put it) to install itself in the environs of my home office, never to be exorcised.

So at the risk of sounding ungrateful or overly picky -- neither of which I am, I assure you -- I'm going to stick with a refurbed 24-inch iMac from the Apple Store, which will also come with a one-year warranty, something I hope to not ever have to think about again after typing it here. And given the absolutely humbling response I've gotten to this fundraiser so far, it ought to be doable by the end of the week -- another in a long list of things I have to remember, and remember well, this coming Thanksgiving Day.

I'll be sure to put something up at my place tomorrow morning.

I'll drop a little something in your stocking at the BP's show this Saturday. Janet & I don't have a whole lot to spare, but we would be pleased to share our "spare" with you, old friend. You've had enough s*#$ in your life this past year. It's about time for something good to come your way...in a BIG way. Janet says you'll have to wish her a Happy Birthday also at the show, for her big day is tomorrow. (she's older'n me, though)
    See you Saturday!

Heard over at NiceDoggie, got an email from Misha that you're down with Mac issues. I've been playing with them since '84 and have some experience with repair. Drop me an email if I can be of help!

No hope there, AJ. Had it over to the Apple Store on Friday, and they say the logic board is fried. Around an 800 dollar repair, when the refurbed ones with an Intel processor instead of the overtaxed G5 is only a couple hundred more. So it didn't make a lot of sense to fix it. In fact, the Genius Bar guy offered to have it hauled to the recycling center for me, and when I forlornly proposed a generous trade-in allowance on a new one for it, he just shook his head incredulously and laughed.

But thanks just the same for your kind offer. And Rusty, and dpu, thanks to both of you as well, and to everyone else here. I gots a lotta e-mails to write over the next few days...

My congratulation with first place in overall count on Olympic Games. Michael Phelps was the best!
