It’s no longer about gay “marriage,” if it ever really was. And it’s no longer an issue freedom-loving people can ignore. Nor is it insignificant, or meaningless. If there was such a thing as a reasonable Left, it could perhaps have been resolved in a fashion that guaranteed the most liberty for the greatest number of people, and everyone’s (gay and straight) right to be left alone would have remained mostly intact. But that would have been the case only if this remained a true republic governed by the Constitution of the Founders–America, instead of “America” v2.0–and if the benighted brats and fools residing on the ground formerly occupied by that republic were still truly Americans.
Instead, here we are.
When the journalist asked owners of a small, rural pizzeria the equivalent of ”are you now or have you ever been a member of a traditional church?” they answered honestly. So the reporter juiced up the headline by claiming the business refused to serve gays. National outlets ran with the useful lie. The rest is mob violence history.
Progressives threatened to rob Memories Pizza, kill the owners, and burn it to the ground. The terrified couple locked up the store and were too afraid to leave their home due to the threats. This pizza place had never been asked to cater a same-sex wedding — or any wedding ever. It had never refused service to anyone. The owners had never threatened physical harm against a soul.
Tumbrels rolled down Main Street anyway. Jealous at the online buzz, now CNN is calling random businesses to out the traditionally religious. The crowd must be sated. Dissent must be crushed.
All this time, I naively viewed the legalization of same-sex marriage as the goal of its proponents. Well-meaning people who wanted the same legal rights as their heterosexual brothers and sisters. How could my marriage be damaged by simply allowing another couple the same options I enjoy?
But for many activists, same-sex marriage was just a convenient tactic to achieve a much broader goal. Their real desire was to silence dissent. To drive the traditional, the conservative, and the religious underground. To destroy their businesses and threaten their lives. To ensure the minority understood there was no place for them in this nation.
I hope that one day, progressives will learn how to accept people different from themselves. But now that SSM is nearly a fait accompli, I’m wondering which wedge issue will be used next to hammer the stubborn square pegs into the round holes of post-Obama America.
I wonder too. But none of us need wonder for a moment about whether or not there will be one–and it will revolve around a manufactured “right” that no one had even conceived of before, the idea of which currently would seem perfectly absurd. But we also shouldn’t imagine that our descent into brutal Left tyranny will ever be considered complete by our new masters:
At some point, the social-justice warrior crowd is going to incite their people into something more than Ferguson or Occupy or Internet harassment. At some point, their fanatic desire to erase God from the hearts and minds and actions of red America will cross a threshold. Someday, in some town, a Christian shopkeeper who becomes the focus of the 4chan or Reddit Rage Machine will be killed by some militant atheist or black bloc kid or some other flavor of crazy. That day, their rage won’t come from the click of a mouse, but from the barrel of a gun.
On that day, instead of reacting with horror and disgust, someone important enough in their social-justice-warrior universe–be it a political figure, a celebrity, or just a popular activist–will say something like, “I abhor violence, but…”
On the day that “but” becomes acceptable on the Left, it’s a ratchet that turns only one way. When political violence becomes mainstreamed, it infects a society quickly. It’s a short, quick slide into hell. The tolerance crowd will read that scenario and explode with denials. They’re never going to call for violence. Leftism is a peaceful religion. (Sound familiar?)
Sorry, kids. The twentieth century (really, every century) is replete with examples of the boundaries of civilization fraying when the cause of the day made religiously or ideologically driven violence acceptable. In almost every case, the owners of the dominant share of cultural and social power did let it happen there. I fear that even here, even now we’re not beyond it.
If, following a breathless media report, it’s okay to destroy the business of someone who objects to you or your lifestyle on religious grounds, why not burn their home down? Does someone like that really deserve to have a place to live? Why not torch his cars? His kids are allowed in school? Hell, why not drag those hateful, homophobic bigots outside and hang them, pour encourager les autres? Of course, it couldn’t happen here, says America’s justice-warrior class, “We just want you to stop having Wrong Thoughts.”
The Rage Machine’s footsoldiers are unable to imagine consequence, or accountability–and it shows. They’ve been told what the Wrong Thoughts are and, by Tyson, they’re going to punish the people who hold them. You might think some vestigial moral center of the Left would rein in their vanguard, but as in so many cases before, they’re hiding behind the “it can’t happen here” argument. It resonates well in their minds–and with their media enablers.
I imagine that promise sits less comfortably with the uneasy ghosts of Germany, Russia, China, Cambodia, Vietnam, Armenia, Bosnia, Rwanda, and a hundred other less-known excursions into correcting the Wrong Thoughts of the Wrong People.
What we’re now seeing is not the culmination (as I said above, there will never be one; the Leftist gun will ever be at our backs to coerce us on) but the inevitable next step on the Leftist totalitarian path. As with gun control, battling “climate change,” the growth of the welfare state, and every single other issue you can think of in which the Left considers itself to have a vital interest–which is all of them; it’s not called “totalitarianism” for nothing, you know–the push will be relentless, remorseless, and never-ending.
They will not stop. And we will not be rid of them until either they are dead or we are enslaved. That is their one true goal. It is their only goal. And they by God intend to attain it, by any and all means they deem necessary.
Better recognize that simple fact now, folks, before it’s demonstrated for you personally, and in an irrevocable way. I’ll guarantee you that those who have been hounded out of their homes and businesses by the baying, vicious mob don’t harbor any illusions about their tormenters’ “good intentions,” or about just what kind of people we’re up against, and to what lengths they might go. And sooner better than later lest we end up realizing it only when the European Jews did, on the last step of their own Leftward journey: into the cattle cars, ovens, gas chambers, and crematoriums.
Think that’s a bit much? Maybe you ought to ask George Zimmerman, Darren Wilson, Brendon Eich, Barronelle Stutzman, Crystal O’Connor, or any of an ever-growing list of people given the Leftist mob treatment about it.
No, none of those people were killed–yet. That does NOT amount to a compelling argument for trusting that the Left would never go quite that far; it’s more an issue of timing than of will and intent. History demonstrates over and over that they not only will, but in actual fact have. When the first of us is left swinging from a gibbet or lying on bloody ground by them, guys like Ross Douthat and Jazz Shaw will probably be surprised; will you? How about after the tenth? Or thousandth? Or millionth?
I keep saying it: the road we’re on only goes one way, and ends up in a very well-known and familiar place. There are plenty of signs and markers along the route that indicate the destination, and only a fool would be shocked when we finally arrive there after our Long March.
