Klavan is right enough, as far as it goes. But it’s a bit more complicated than just being right:
So the double standard continues with Cain. Not only have the reliably left wing news sites like ABC, CBS, NBC and CNN been acting as if this were the story of the decade, but right wing sites like Fox and our own PJMedia have added fuel to the fire, eagerly tracking down more details. You can be sure that will keep happening as the story proceeds. And if Cain turns out to be guilty, you won’t be hearing any excuses for him here.
And yes, it’s unfair. But there’s a reason it’s unfair—a reason it should be unfair. There’s a reason we right wingers vet our candidates while the left adulates theirs, a reason we condemn our miscreants while the left elevates theirs, a reason our news outlets cover stories that the left covers up.
The reason is: we’re the good guys. We have to do what’s right. The left doesn’t. Sorry, but that’s the way it works. It’s the price you pay for defending what’s true and good, the price of holding yourself to a high moral standard. Our politicians have to be better than their politicians. Our journalists have to be more honest. Even our protesters have to behave with decorum and decency—and still suffer being slandered—while theirs can act like animals and commit acts of violence and lawlessness and spew anti-semitic filth and still find themselves excused and glorified.
There’s a reason the bad guy in movies is always chuckling darkly while the hero frequently finds himself with a laser beam cutting a path toward his vitals. The world is a place that has to be fought for and wrongdoers hold high power in every field. Liars wear ties and sit behind desks and tell us “That’s the way it is!” while drawing seven figure salaries from mainstream corporations. Truth tellers—the Becks, the Limbaughs, the Coulters, the Breitbarts—have to create their own venues while dodging brickbats and charges of bigotry and meanness and insanity.
Herman Cain is going to have to run the gauntlet, not just of a racist and dishonest left that wants to destroy him but of a fair-minded and decency-loving right that wants him to come fully clean and let the voters decide how we should proceed. The fight for truth, liberty and morality requires sacrifice and self-examination. The self-righteous quest for power over others does not.
All true enough, all well and good. But it’s only in the movies that the good guys always come out on top. Unfortunately, in real life, an eye-gouging, groin-kicking, sucker-punching street fighter will beat a fastidious, Marquess of Queensbury rules-following, above-the-fray type just about every time.
What this amounts to is this: Cain is done. And he’s done because we’re going to let the liars impugn his character with almost no supporting evidence at all. In the interest of being above it all, too scrupulous to get down in the muck with our dishonest antagonists and fight back with every tool at our disposal, we’re going to allow the liberal media hound one of ours right out of the race before even one primary vote is cast.
There are disadvantages to having a shred of decency and integrity. Falling prey to those who don’t again and again is one of them. We ought to be making room for some dirty fighters on our own side–because we need them. As Rush said: we need a Larry Flynt of our own. Doesn’t mean we have to lie and fabricate smears like they routinely do. But it does mean we have to press every advantage we can possibly find, even if it means getting our hands dirty digging around in the muck to dig up some real dirt, and then flinging it as hard as we can at their heads.
Jeff sums it all up nicely:
We’re living through an attempted coup. And our major worry seems to be how well Herman Cain’s staff is handling suggestions that he once made a pass at a woman. Who waited 16 years to hold a press conference about it.
No wonder we’re so well and truly fucked.
That would seem to be about the size of it, yeah. And then there’s this:
However, if the latest claims are proven to be true, or viewed as true by voters, Barbour says they could be fatal to Cain’s candidacy.
“If there is any substance to the claims, if the American people believe that somebody abused women, they are not going to elect him or her president,” he says. “If this were taken as being true, and people believe it’s true, then I don’t think that can be overcome.”
“That’s just not acceptable behavior in our country, particularly if there is a pattern,” he says.
Actually, it’s perfectly acceptable–as long as it’s a Democrat Socialist doing it. And by refusing to fight back with every weapon we can lay our hands to, we effectively ratify that double standard. There’s never going to be a reason for lying liberals to abandon this approach as long as we help to ensure that it’s effective for them.
“She was fired from her job, and her boyfriend suggested she contact Cain in hopes he could help her find employment.”.
In this particular incident she was fired for falsely accusing her boss of sexual harassment, a charge denied by co-workers, as well as being pretty much a pain in the ass to work with.
“I remember her as a time-waster, and rabble-rouser. If she didn’t get her way she cried about sexual harassment”. A former co-worker, a female no less, emailed me. “She was trouble with a capital “T”. The fact that she waited 13 years and never said a word not even during Cain’s earlier forays into politics. She only now magically appears because Cain is leading in some polls and proving a threat to Barack Obama?
Precisely so. But watch as some on the Right fall all over themselves to furrow their brows and opine about how “deeply troubling” this is.
Blue on blue update! Dr Helen ain’t having any of Andrew’s plea for nobility:
Bullshit. What Klavan is advocating is political suicide. He might as well have taken his playbook from Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals where Alinsky’s fourth rule is “Make the enemy live up to their own book of rules. You can kill them with this…”
Mr. Klavan, telling the right that they have to live up to some impossible standard while excusing the left is laughable. All it will get you is defeated…
The point is, we must not let the left use our morality to hold us hostage…The good guy doesn’t always win just because you want him to. And though you can feel noble about being the honorable one, honor is no substitute for the loss of freedom, increased government regulation, and economic woes that our country will suffer if the left wins on election day.
I’ve said the same many times here. How much is feeling good about ourselves for not “sinking to their level” really worth? Is it worth ceding the battle for the future of this nation (if any) over? I’d say absolutely not, but YMMV.
