Et tu<\/em>, Mrs Butterworth’s<\/a>?<\/p>\n

Both hot cereal maker Cream of Wheat and syrup brand Mrs. Butterworth\u2019s have confirmed they\u2019ve initiated packaging reviews in the wake of PepsiCo\u2019s bombshell announcement on Wednesday that\u00a0it would retire Aunt Jemima\u00a0after 131 years.<\/p>\n

That was quickly followed on Wednesday by\u00a0a statement from Uncle Ben\u2019s, which said it is \u201cevolving the visual brand identity.\u201d A spokesperson said the brand is \u201cevaluating all possibilities,\u201d so it is unclear if the name Uncle Ben will remain.<\/p>\n

Once again, this marks a dramatic shift for these brands\u2019 corporate parent companies, who just two months ago had little or no comment on\u00a0the mascots\u2019 roots in nostalgia for slavery.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

“Nostalgia for slavery,” is it? Well, okay then. An easy call to make, I guess, especially when you hear the exaggerated Negro patois<\/em> that fairly well screams—FOR JUSTICE!—from this old ad:
