Evergreen

In an email exchange with Ironbear earlier I mentioned the incomparable onetime blogger Billy Beck, who I used to correspond regularly with back in the day. We were like those “brothers from different mothers” i’ th’ adage: both of us working guitar-slingers, military aviation buffs, and RightwingNaziDeathbeast Hitlerbloggers with a penchant for expressing ourselves in a totally unrestrained and, shall we say, plainspoken fashion.

I somehow lost touch with Billy some years back, and find myself wondering now about where he might be and what he might be getting up to out there. Though some of the more staid blogosphere denizens in those days regarded him (and me, let’s face it) as way too offbeat, obnoxious, and extreme for civilized company (if not actually crazier than a shithouse rat), as it turns out, what Billy in fact was was a fucking prophet. It’s positively uncanny how many of the things he was sounding the alarm about years ago have come to pass, no matter how seemingly outlandish or outside the odds the prediction might have seemed at the time.

Unfortunately, his blog archives were long ago cast into the outer darkness and are now unavailable anywhere, near as I can make out. Despite this grievous loss, I’m sure almost all CF Lifers will be familiar with his best-known apophthegm: “All politics in this country now is just dress rehearsal for civil war.” Bizarrely, and to Billy’s horror and disgust, that one was later hijacked for nefarious purposes by none other than a certain William J “Bill” Clinton:

Since inception, the line “All politics in this country now is just dress rehearsal for civil war” has been listed on or near the mastheads of a number of politically-oriented websites, among them Sipsey Street Irregulars and Western Rifle Shooters Association, as well as a popular signature phrase in the posts of Usenet newsgroup participants at the time. (The quote was later cited in HL Goodall’s 2010 book, Counter-Narrative: How Progressive Academics Can Challenge Extremism and Promote Social Justice.)

Clinton’s mangle, in a speech to the Center for American Progress, April 6, 2010:

“…One of these guys the other day said that all politics is just a prelude to the ultimate and inevitable civil war. You know, I’m a southerner. I know what happened. We were still paying for that 100 years later when I was a kid growing up, in ways large and small. It doesn’t take many people to take something like that seriously. So I don’t want the whole story of this retrospective just to be about this, and trying to turn everything into politics….”

Naturally, Billy returned fire at The Creep with a characteristically eloquent, thunderous, yet laid-back salvo that was pure 180-proof Billy Beck™:

Beck’s response:

“Here is my conjecture: the ex-president either briefly eyeballed that blog himself, or accepted a memo from one of his flunkies which included the line that I wrote.

I have made up my mind that I would be no more interested in hearing his apology than I am offended by his presumption. It is simply a matter of note that The Lying Bastard of The Ozark Long March knows nothing of which he speaks, amid his insinuations that I advocate violence in this poor country’s current straits.

Here is a word for that despicable person: I am “a Southerner”, too, you strutting ignoramus. I was born in Little Rock, and my mother graduated Central High School six years before Eisenhower finally saw fit to roll out the National Guard. Don’t even try to hand me your threadbare sanctimony about “paying” for the Civil War. For many reasons which I will not attempt to relate to you, I am quite beyond your ex cathedra pose in the matter. You have nothing to say to me. Sit down and shut your insipid mouth.”—Billy Beck, April 21, 2010

Oof. I mean, just…OOF. Also: OUCH.

In casting about trying to locate other traces of his former online presence, I did manage to run across a few more good ‘uns, the first from another sorely-missed Dearly Departed colleague:

Billy Beck nails the auto industry “bailout”
“Things will start to get better when the last indignant buggy-whip maker is strangled with the entrails of the last commissar.”
Billy Beck, 8 December 2008

Tasty stuff, no? And then there’s this, which is so dead-on descriptive of where we find ourselves today as to make the hair on the back of one’s neck stand straight up and salute:

I keep saying it: the basic conflict in American politics is individualism vs. collectivism in all its pretense forms and manifestation. I keep saying it because no arrangements of coalition electoral politics will address this fundamental schism: as the necessary economic implications become real, so-called ‘democracy’ becomes impotent to manage coalition demands, all while the force of ‘law’ becomes more arbitrary at coalition demand.

I’ve been saying it for at least fifteen years: “The pace of this thing is picking up.”

I hate to keep saying it, because I know it’s no fun to hear it and it just wears my narrow white ass out to keep-ass saying it, but the real problem under all this is fucking enormous.

I really don’t think it can be fixed before it really goes the way of the pear. We’re really in it. In our lifetimes.
Billy Beck, Two-Four – What Really Happened

A decade and more ago, Billy was an adept enough visionary to pierce the fog and discern the Big Issues clearly, when the rest of us silly kids still went around acting as if elections mattered.

Time was, stuff like the above sounded genuinely over the top and excessive to most people even on this side of the Great Divide. Now those placid days grow ever harder to recall, while the steady march of history goes about guaranteeing that Billy Beck’s wisdom and insight won’t be forgotten. As I said to ‘Bear: Poor Chicken Little is always laughed at as a nut and a hysteric by more sensible people. And then, one day, the sky comes crashing down on everybody.

Billy, wherever you are: my deepest respect and fondest regards to you, my friend. Hope you’re well.

Publick Notice

So after a little email conversatin’ with our bud BCE, it hath come to pass that we’ve gifted each other with reciprocal username/passes at our respective online hogwallows, editor-level access. So y’all can expect to see some Intrepid Reporting hereabouts, as his readers will be forced to endure the occasional splattering of Cold Furiosity over there.

I couldn’t really say how much of this crossover-blogging might be expected from either of us, though. I can barely scrounge time and energy to post here, let alone DP, Porretto’s, or BCE’s dens of iniquity. And Big Country seems to be pretty busy of late his own self, what with this, that, and the other blasted thing. We’ll just have to wait and see about that, I reckon. Whichever way things shake out, I’m damn pleased and proud to offer him a most hearty welcome aboard over here, and I’m sure you folks feel the same way about it.

New linkage

For some unfathomable reason I was motivated this fine evening to do some overdue housekeeping in Ye Olde Blogrolle sectione, eliminating a few apparently now-defunct links, adding a few I had assumed were already in there but weren’t (BCE, I’m looking at you, kid! Sorry ’bout that), and just generally rearranging and tidying up. As a result, we have ourselves several brand-new inhabitants of the Blogrolle, so be sure to check ’em out.

Again, my apologies to Big Country. I still can’t believe he got left out; I really, really thought he was in there, and had been for a good while now. Color me shamefaced.

Say it ain’t so, Joe!

Ran across a disturbing thing over at Anonymous Conservative’s joint, a thing disturbing enough that I’m not sure whether I should even mention it here. But what the hell, I’ll throw it out there sans any analysis or opinionating from me and let y’all kick it around some.

Gateway Pundit author Casandra Fairbanks shills for donations for an FBI informant involved in the Capitol riot. She actually has a feel about her which I always associated with Cabal surveillance. I remember when I first heard about her I did a search, curious if it would turn up something related to surveillance. At the time, she was dating an FBI informant who worked for Breitbart, IIRC. Now she is shilling this one. Weird tidbit somebody said on Free Republic – the guy behind Gateway Pundit was actually a closeted gay when he started the site, so he had something to hide, which of course surveillance would have been all into. I periodically check traffic on Similarweb, and I guarantee you Gateway Pundit is not getting 32 million visits per month. I don’t judge. Standing up to the machine is tougher than many would be capable of, and I am lucky it doesn’t bother me in many ways. But it to keep track of where your info is coming from, even if they do offer a lot of good info most of the time. They are hiding the big stuff, and you will never hear them talk about the domestic netowrk.

AC links to another article, which ramps “disturbing” right on up to “dismaying.”

The Gateway Pundit Shills Donations for FBI Informant Involved in Capitol Riot
Cassandra Fairbanks is a writer for the so-called conservative outlet The Gateway Pundit. Here’s an article published on the Gateway Pundit yesterday:

EXCLUSIVE: Capital One Cancels Proud Boys Leader Enrique Tarrio’s Credit Card Over ‘Adverse Past or Present Legal Action’

The article deplores the fact that Enrique has been banned by credit card processors and one or more of his bank accounts were closed in the aftermath of the Capitol riots. Moreover, the Gateway Pundit asks its readers to help Enrique with donations:

As Tarrio was sending this comment to Gateway, he discovered that he was also banned from his credit card processor was while he was typing. Those who wish to contribute to Tarrio while he tries to get around this blockade can do so on Zelle using the email “FundTheWest@gmail.com.” At least until they cave to liberal pressure and do the same thing, that is. You can also send him Bitcoin here.

There’s a lot to unpack here. If you’re up to date with what’s going on, you’re probably aware of the fact that Enrique Tarrio is a fed. This is an admitted fact even in mainstream media circles.

This is from Reuters:

Exclusive: Proud Boys leader was ‘prolific’ informer for law enforcement
Enrique Tarrio, the leader of the Proud Boys extremist group, has a past as an informer for federal and local law enforcement, repeatedly working undercover for investigators after he was arrested in 2012, according to a former prosecutor and a transcript of a 2014 federal court proceeding obtained by Reuters.

Enrique Tarrio isn’t facing any charges related to the Capitol events, even if Proud Boys are charged with criminal conspiracy.

Why?

Well, because he’s a fed, obviously. Which brings us to the logical question: why is The Gateway Pundit shilling for this FBI informant? Why are they asking their readers to send money to a fed?

Why is Cassandra Fairbanks defending Tarrio, the man who helped stage the fake and gay 1/6 so-called insurrection which led to Trump being impeached and banned from all social media?

We are in the middle of a huge scandal about the FBI involvement in the Capitol riots, and so-called right-wing journalists at the Gateway Pundit are shilling key FBI informants involved in this fiasco.

Keep in mind that this literal FBI undercover informant was behind the transformation of the Proud Boys from Gavin McInnes’ fun times drinking club into a paramilitary street-fighting organization.

The main issue is this: you cannot allow people like Tarrio in your political movement. You cannot be taken seriously as a right-wing operation if you accept and support proven FBI informants; you’re just a laughing stock if you pretend this didn’t happen.

What kind of political movement refuses to expel and then goes on to celebrate people who are confirmed to have been government infiltrators trying to bring down the movement?

A doomed one, that’s what.

As I said before, I ain’t entirely comfortable about posting this. I AM entirely dismayed and disappointed at the possibility that it might be so. Gateway Pundit has been a pretty good source of information for me over the years, although it’s also true that they can be a bit, shall we say, overly dramatic about things sometimes. Nonetheless, even granting a certain amount of hype and hysteria now and then, they’ve generally been reliable. So I am and most likely will remain of two minds about whether I should even bring this ugly business up at all.

Basically, we have several possibilities in play:

  • That it’s all horseshit of the purest ray serene, motivated by God only knows what;
  • That Fairbanks is indeed a sketchy character at best, a clandestine source of intelligence for the Feebs, but Jim Hoft is unaware of the situation;
  • That Hoft IS aware of it, making GP a blog that those on the side of Truth, Justice, and the American Way can no longer trust or rely on;
  • Some other bizarre circumstance altogether that the rest of us will neither know about nor understand unless and until the purveyors of GP decide to address the situation publicly, which they may very well not

I decided to call a certain fellow RightwingNaziDeathBeast Hitlerblogger I know who shall remain nameless (another of the White Hat bloggers that I link to and excerpt here frequently, a good guy that I trust without reservation) and talk it all over. After a lengthy phone conversation, I feel that this info needs to get out there, if only to spark blogosphere conversation.

Please understand: I’m not trying to gin up controversy. I’m certainly not leveling any accusations against anyone, attacking them, or anything of a like nature. I have no interest whatever in trying to use this post to drive traffic to this websty; I get plenty enough visitors here as it is, and grubbing for more of it has never been something I cared about.*

All that said, the truth is that these are very dangerous times we’re living in, and the stakes couldn’t be much higher. The sad fact is, none of us—not bloggers, not commenters, not lurkers, NONE of us—can any longer afford to go on blithely assuming that no FederalGovCo vipers have slithered into our little nest. Those of us on this side of the political chasm already have abundant evidence that there are eyes on us.

Contra this post’s title (which I used because I found it mildly amusing, the method I’ve always used for titling these ramblings of mine), I am not demanding a response or anything else from the folks at GP. I’ve never corresponded with Jim or any of his co-bloggers, and have no personal axe to grind with any of them. But if wider dissemination of this information can inspire further discussion about the many serious issues involved, along with creating a heightened sense of awareness and caution on Team Liberty, Blogosphere Division’s part…well, that’s all to the good, I think.

* Believe it or not, I can’t even remember the last time I checked the site stats, but it would have to be a few years. With my famously convulated, excessively wordy writing style, the no-holds-barred language (ahem) I use to express myself, and the diverse topics I write about, CF will always be somewhat of a niche blog, and that’s just jake with me. As I must’ve said a bajillion times over lo, these 20 years: if you don’t like it, then do feel free to hie your ass elsewhere. There are plenty of other blogs out there that will suit your fancy better, and this one ain’t gonna be a-changing for you, no matter how loud or how frequently you scream about it.

An encouraging word

Since I couldn’t make it work as a comment over at Expat’s joint, I’ll just post this here and hope he sees it:

“A single grateful thought toward heaven is the most perfect prayer.” — Gotthold Ephraim Lessing

One of the best, most profound quotes I know of. Hang in there, ol’ son. Long as you’re still breathing, they haven’t beat you yet.

The greatest meme of all time!

Ye Olde Intrepide Reporter has it.

TeaBagDotGov.jpg

Kinda says it all, don’t it?

Oh, and speaking of Expat, he just got canned from his job, so could probably do with a little help. The generosity of you CF Lifers has always humbled and amazed me, so if any of you rapscallions can send a shekel or two his way I’m sure it would be hugely appreciated.

News to me

Apparently, we had a brief outage at this here hogwallow, which I didn’t even know about until I saw this over at WRSA:

I had a message earlier from CA saying that he was down too, asking me and a couple others to let people know about it on our sites. Which I gladly would have done except that I didn’t see said message until today, at which point he had already sent a follow-up cancelling the alert. Like I said, the whole episode went right by me; I had no problem at all posting here last night, although at one point I did have trouble getting WRSA to load but didn’t really think anything of it. Since I visit CA’s joint several times every day, and only look in on CF very occasionally just to make sure things are copacetic (comments being the exception; I have things set up so that I receive email notifications of those, which I usually view on my phone), it’s no real surprise that I was totally unaware of any problems at Ye Olde Webstye.

But hey, all’s well that ends well, right? Thanks to all who tried to hip me about the situation; as ever, I greatly appreciate y’all’s patronage and assistance. Truth to tell, interference along these lines is the very least of what I expect we’ll all be dealing with going forward. I won’t go into specifics regarding what more I’m anticipating, other than to say I’ve been wondering for a while now just how much longer we’re all going to be allowed to continue unmolested. Eyes open and powder dry, folks.

Update! Almost forgot to include a link to CA’s Gab thingamabob, which can be found here. I was also shamed to learn I hadn’t put him on my Gab “Following” list, which oversight I have now rectified. I fully expect and insist that you folks do likewise. As you were.

Evil comes to your house

BCE posts some shocking, infuriating, just damned awful news, which I’m not gonna excerpt. Toss back a good, stiff belt of something strong and just read it…and don’t for one second assume you’re safe or immune from something similar, wherever you may reside. Nobody is.s

Make it so

I love it.

Good. There should be a fireteam in full battle-rattle on every DC streetcorner, loaded rifles kept at the low ready. Razor wire, Jersey barriers, and ten-foot security fencing as far as the eye can see. I want every federal orc in DC facing a Checkpoint Chickie every third block or so on his way to work, featuring full body-scans, thorough wandings and pat-downs, with random individuals also pulled aside for a public strip-search. There should be twice or thrice as many Cougars, Brads, and Dragoons to be seen prowling the streets as there are private vehicles, with all civilian vehicular traffic strictly prohibited within, say, half a mile of any USG facility.

No tourists, sightseers, looky-loos whatsoever allowed in Mordor OTP proper—in fact, no uncredentialed visitors of any kind, without having been most scrupulously vetted and investigated before permission is granted. Any person not wearing plainly-visible ID at all times authorizing their presence shall be considered an imminent threat, therefore subject to immediate arrest and indefinite detention without benefit of legal representation or communication with the outside world. Should a detainee be judged uncooperative or otherwise evince anything short of total submission to the authorities, he may be shot at the sole discretion of Imperial Defense Force personnel.

The scuttling insects whose insatiable craving for unchecked power drove them to the seat of federal tyranny should, at the very least, suffer non-trivial daily inconvenience and hassle as the price to be paid for their ill-gotten privilege. So let them pay it, then. With the disenfrachisement of fully half the population via the recent fraudulent election the Ruling Class, secure in its arrogance, audaciously removed the demos from democracy. The illegitimate junta ruling this land from Mordor OTP is, de facto, an Occupation Government. It by God ought to look like one, if only to prevent any misunderstandings. May every hapless Amerikan subject to the capricious cruelty of the Imperial Capital get a good, long look at exactly what kind of government they live under.

Eyes on

So this happened.

That’s our esteemed colleaugue Wes over at NC Renegade, enjoying an unscheduled and unsolicited visit from The Man. If you scroll down through the comments, you’ll see that he is hardly alone in that distinction. To his great credit, Wes seems to have conducted himself quite admirably, handling a seriously dangerous situation with backbone and finesse. Good on ‘im for that.

But with that in mind, and having for years seen all kinds of dot-gov IP’s in the CF server logs back when I used to check ’em, I feel it’s high time for me to rethink a few things, maybe do a little attitude-adjusting. Yep, starting now it’s a brand new day and a brand new way, so y’all are gonna be seeing some changes around this hogwallow, people, starting in 3…2…1…

Probably the last time I’ll be trotting out this deathless tune, more relevant now than it ever was before.

Farewell to Kaithy Shaidle

She left us with one hell of a fine obituary.

Following a tedious rendezvous with ovarian cancer, Kathy Shaidle has died, wishing she’d spent more time at the office.

Her tombstone reads: GET OFF MY LAWN!

She is relieved she won’t have to update her LinkedIn profile, shave her legs, or hear “Creep” by Radiohead ever again. Some may even be jealous that she’s getting out of enduring a Biden presidency.

Kathy was a writer, author, columnist and blogging pioneer, as proud of her first book’s Governor General’s Award nomination as of her stint as “Ed Anger” for the Weekly World News. A target for “cancel” culture before the term was coined, she was denounced by all the best people, sometimes for contradictory reasons.

Kathy did not lead a particularly “full life,” her existence having been comprised mostly of a series of unpleasant surprises. Her favourite corporeal pleasure was saying, “I told you so,” which she was able to utter with justification multiple times a day. A bookish movie-buff and agoraphobic homebody, as a child Kathy (as per the Roz Chast cartoon) “always preferred the little couch ride on the merry-go-round.” Yet Kathy managed to acquire a reputation for mouthiness, a side effect of her bullshit allergy.

Contrary to cliche, Kathy did not conduct herself with particular “grace,” “dignity” or “courage” in her final months. She didn’t “bravely fight on” after her cancer was pronounced terminal. All she did was (barely) cope, and then only with assistance from her generous employer, and some energetic and selfless friends whom she’d somehow managed to acquire over the years, much to her astonishment. Of course, the greatest of these was her stalwart beloved of over 20 years, Arnie, with whom she is now in the ultimate long distance relationship. They can all finally catch up on their sleep.

Kathy’s bereaved co-blogger Mark Steyn adds:

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Kathy Shaidle, a dear friend and our peerless movie essayist, who left us just before six o’clock this morning at Mississauga Hospital in Ontario.

In a too short life, Kathy wrote in almost every form: She is the only writer I know who was both a respected poet nominated for major prizes and the “Ed Anger” columnist of The Weekly World News. And, as most of you know, after 9/11 she became the leading Canadian polemicist in the great messy decentralized blogosphere we miss so much in the age of Social Media woketalitarianism.

There will be time to discuss all that in the days ahead. But on Saturday evenings, for the past several years, Kathy was here every week to talk about movies. A decade or so back, I had suggested to the fellows who run Maclean’s that they snap her up to do a column on pop culture, because nobody wrote better on Joan Crawford, punk and a zillion other subjects. They were a little nervous of that, and somewhere along the way Maclean’s ceased to be a thing, and so at some point I just thought, “Aw, nuts! We should snap her up ourselves.”

What I particularly loved about Kathy’s film essays was the occasional glimpses she gave us of her own life. One should not take it all as gospel: She had a carefully constructed persona as an agoraphobic misanthrope who never left the flat. Whereas, as Mark Steyn cruisers who had the good fortune to be at her dinner table will attest, in real life she was gregarious and occasionally (as I told her a couple of weeks back somewhat to her horror) verging on bubbly. I had the pleasure a few years ago of introducing her to half the Canadian cabinet over pizza at the Prime Minister’s house. Reading about it afterwards, the highly-strung leftie bloggers were horrified at the thought of the hated Shaidle piercing the holy sanctum of 24 Sussex Drive like a one-woman trial run for the mob’s storming of the US Capitol. But the various ministers of the Crown seemed to enjoy the opportunity to shoot the breeze with her – as we all did.

I especially love the Ed Anger business, which, despite having been an Anger devotee myself in the long ago and far away—despite a good friend of mine having also worked at WWN back in the halcyon Bat Boy era, even*—I didn’t know about before now. Steyn has a second Shaidle memorial post up, featuring a video compendium of scorching quotes from her appearances on the Mark Steyn Show.

Rest now, girlfriend; forever may you be be at peace. And: well done.

* Believe it or not, I actually had a Bat Boy t-shirt that was sent to me by said friend as a gift, a garment I wore with tremendous pride until the thing was nothing but a tattered rag, as any decent, right-thinking American would have. She also revealed the epic Bat Boy behind-the-scenes story to me back then—a sordid, shocking tale of love, bravery, and betrayal which is now so highly-classified I could easily be killed by shadowy Black-Ops assassins for even having brought it up.

This means war!

Damn, this is depressing. But it’s who they are. It’s what they do.

Most CTH readers are likely aware of the term “deplatforming.” Unfortunately, the big tech control mechanism to shut down speech & assembly has now arrived on our doorstep.

One week after the 2020 presidential election, The Conservative Treehouse received the following notification:

…”given the incompatibility between your site’s content and our terms, you need to find a new hosting provider and must migrate the site by Wednesday, December 2nd.

The WordPress company is not explaining the reason for deplatforming because there is no justifiable reason for it. At the same time, they are bold in their position. Perhaps this is the most alarming part; and everyone should pay attention. They don’t care.

Truthful assembly is now the risk. CTH is now too big; with a site reach of 500,000 to a million unique readers each day; and with well over 200,000 subscribers; our assembly is too large, too influential, and presents a risk…we guard the flickering flame.

The ‘content’ is not compatible with WordPress, the world’s largest website and blog hosting service. The content within the largest blog on that global platform is what has become troublesome. “The content”.

The content on these pages is simply an ongoing discussion about freedom with criticism against any political party or entity that diminishes it. Apparently, immediately after the 2020 election, that discussion became problematic. After writing about the COVID-19 agenda,…the notification: the website will be removed.

Let that settle in…friends and adversaries alike. Think very hard about what exactly is being represented by these actions. That’s the bad news.

To anyone out there still telling him or herself that naaah, they won’t come for ME: Yes, they’re coming for you too.

I’ve had a long and happy relationship with the WP platform, in large part thanks to one of WP’s longtime Lead Developers, a fellow old-timey blogger and all-around good dude by the name of Mark Jaquith. Back in the day, anytime I ran into some problem or other with the CF WP install, Mark was the guy I would go screaming to for help, which he always cheerfully provided. Far as I know, he’s no longer affiliated with WordPress, although I haven’t talked to him in years and could be completely wrong about that.

This here hogwallow was originally designed, built, and run not using any blogging software at all—the options for that were pretty thin on the ground back in 2001, and my knowledge of any of them even thinner—but with Adobe GoLive, with which I was already comfortable from my fledgling website design “career.” I stuck with that pain-in-the-ass setup briefly, then switched over to GreyMatter on the advice of the legendary Steven Den Beste. After a year or two on GM, I then moved house once again to the venerable Movable Type platform, which seemed to be the coming thing amongst a lot of OG warbloggers. WP came along soon after; being your basic Mark-1 Mod-0 early adopter type, I jumped aboard, with nary a backward glance since.

Up till now I’ve been more than happy with WordPress, which makes this revolting assault on free speech all the more horrifying to me. I can’t even begin to imagine someone like Mark Jaquith standing still for such blatant totalitarian censorship; I truly hope that I’m right about his not being involved with them anymore. If he is, I suspect he won’t be for much longer.

WP and Hosting Matters make an excellent combination; the folks at HM are all very familiar with the ins and outs of the WordPress architecture, which makes problem-solving and miscellanous tweaking a hassle-free walk in the park. Sadly, I don’t know of any alternative blogging-software platforms out there that are anywhere near as feature-rich, flexible, and just plain solid as WP is. But believe me: after this sad, depressing, and infuriating news, I’m damned sure gonna be looking. Hard.

"It is terrible to contemplate how few politicians are hanged."
GK Chesterton

"I predict that the Bush administration will be seen by freedom-wishing Americans a generation or two hence as the hinge on the cell door locking up our freedom. When my children are my age, they will not be free in any recognizably traditional American meaning of the word. I’d tell them to emigrate, but there’s nowhere left to go. I am left with nauseating near-conviction that I am a member of the last generation in the history of the world that is minimally truly free."
Donald Surber

"The only way to live free is to live unobserved."
Etienne de la Boiete

"History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid."
Dwight D. Eisenhower

"To put it simply, the Left is the stupid and the insane, led by the evil. You can’t persuade the stupid or the insane and you had damn well better fight the evil."
Skeptic

"There is no better way to stamp your power on people than through the dead hand of bureaucracy. You cannot reason with paperwork."
David Black, from Turn Left For Gibraltar

"If the laws of God and men, are therefore of no effect, when the magistracy is left at liberty to break them; and if the lusts of those who are too strong for the tribunals of justice, cannot be otherwise restrained than by sedition, tumults and war, those seditions, tumults and wars, are justified by the laws of God and man."
John Adams

"The limits of tyranny are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress."
Frederick Douglass

"Give me the media and I will make of any nation a herd of swine."
Joseph Goebbels

“I hope we once again have reminded people that man is not free unless government is limited. There’s a clear cause and effect here that is as neat and predictable as a law of physics: As government expands, liberty contracts.”
Ronald Reagan

"Ain't no misunderstanding this war. They want to rule us and aim to do it. We aim not to allow it. All there is to it."
NC Reed, from Parno's Peril

"I just want a government that fits in the box it originally came in."
Bill Whittle
