Crank it up. Trust me, you’ll be glad you did.
“Every night it’s the same/I feel your heart turn cold as rain…” DAY-UMMM. As perfect an example as can be imagined of how truly powerful a good country-song lyric can be, with that fat baritone guitar riff driving the point home from intro to outro and at all points in between.
Update! How envious I am of my old friend Eddie Angel, who as Emmylou’s lead guitarist for a good few years had the signal honor and privilege of playing this wonderful song onstage all those nights.
As a fan of hers since “Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town ” days I’m hoping you’ve heard this tribute to her Emmylou Harris moved to tears by First Aid Kit at Polar Music Prize Either way KEEP UP THE GREAT FIGHT
I read that Linda Ronstadt complimented Emmylou’s voice as being like
“cracked crystal”. Their version of “Valerie” is one of my favorites.
I only like about 20% of country music, but what I like, I fiercely adore.
Anything by Emmylou Harris is in that small fraction.
You hear her voice, and it’s real country, not pop with a hillbilly twang.
The worst part about her songs is that she’s someone who should get screwed over by a guy every year or two, just so she’ll crank out songs with this kind of bleeding heartache. It comes from the same place that let Johnny Cash, alone at the end of his life, cover Hurt, crush it, and having Trent Reznor say, “It’s not my song anymore. Johnny owns it now.”
With Emmylou, it’s like having an angel in a jar, and every once in awhile, you poke it, just to hear the sounds it makes when it cries.
