Trump drew a shitstorm of outraged puffing and blowing from desk-chair warriors around the globe when he mentioned bringing the US role of propping up the rest of NATO to a past-due close early in his first term, but I thought then and think now that he couldn’t have been righter. NATO’s charter mission was rendered null and void the day the Soviet Union collapsed, and I’ve seen precious little to change my mind since then.

Putin has done more to expand and revitalize NATO than anyone since Stalin.
Which is one helluva big own goal for a guy who was bitching about NATO as the rationale for going adventuring into neighboring countries.

When the Soviet Union failed, we could have created a Marshall Plan for Eastern Europe and brought our Wild Geese home. That would have meant less profits for the MIC so the powers that be first tried to make the military into a humanitarian organization, but that blew up spectacularly in Somalia. Then Bill Clinton found we needed to save the World from the next Hitler, Milosevic in Yugoslavia. So we bombed civilians and embassies in Belgrade to keep the Serbs from marching to Paris.
They said the same thing about Milosevic then they say about Putin now. I don’t think Putin is thinking of letting the Cossacks water their horses in the Seine. He’s only concerned about protecting his border and keeping the American troops far away.
The problem with that is that he views his border as the one one or two countries beyond his border.

And just to preempt you, no I don’t think Putin is a Swell Guy. He’s a brutal dictator and killer but he was no danger to Europe, and the whole thing is not part of American Vital Interests.
What it IS is Deep State interests that wanted to loot and pillage Russia like they are doing to the Ukrainian people and are pissed that Putin won’t go for that.
Oh and they also have been spending the last 30 years diverting attention away from the real dangers, the ChiComs and the Iranians.

I’m not finding anything Aesop stated that is founded in that manner. It is obvious to those that have studied history and understand Putin’s personal history that Putin has a desire to resurrect the Soviet empire. If it’s not obvious then recent events should be useful: Has the invasion of Ukraine inhibited NATO or expanded NATO? Has the invasion of Ukraine made russia safer or placed it in grave danger?
The Ukraine is a corrupt place, as is russia. And so are the people currently in power in our country. None of that changes the basic fact that Putin is a despot that invaded Ukraine for purposes that have nothing to do with any threat from NATO, and the russians are a 3rd world pisspoor country with a weak military made up of conscripts which is why in three years the russians cannot take a country 1/5 it’s size in population that is on it’s own border.

But invading other countries for naught but “Because Fuck You, That’s Why” is exactly why the next tier of countries nearest Russia are champing at the bit to shoot at them next, from Finland all the way down to Turkey.

NATO would be fine were it to actually live up to it’s charter, and if the EU countries would embrace freedom and liberty.

Its charter was to defend against the Soviet Union and The Warsaw Pact Countries arrayed against Western Europe on the border at the Fulda Gap.
That has all went the way of the Dodo.
The “charter” does not mention the Soviet Union, the Warsaw Pact countries,or the Fulda Gap.
While the Russians were the primary enemy at the time the charter was constructed it was never only for the russians. And any charter member is allowed out with a one year notice.
The elimination of the Soviet Union did not dissolve the threat the russians posed to the NATO countries. That should be rather clear today.
