SUICIDE OR TAKE A SIDE
“If buttercups buzz’d after the bee
If boats were on land, churches on sea
If ponies rode men and if grass ate the cows
And cats should be chased into holes by the mouse
If the mamas sold their babies
To the Gypsies for half a crown
If summer were spring
And the other way ’round
Then all the world would be upside down!”
–“The World Turned Upside Down”
When George Washington defeated the World’s Only Superpower at Yorktown in 1781, it is said that British bands played the tune “The World Turned Upside Down”. Whether or not that story is true, Washington did indeed turn their world upside down.
And now Barack Obama has turned much of American life upside down, bringing elements of the radical Communistic change he promised.
He fancies himself the anti-Bush, but he’s really Reagan-in-Reverse. He’s turned Reagan’s “Peace through Strength” Doctrine upside down; now it’s “Strength through Peace”, which is another way of saying “Weakness that Tempts War”.
He’s adopted the opposite economic policy; instead of “trickle-down”, it’s Buckle Up for the Crash. Reagan created 17 million jobs and Obama is on course to shed that many.
He’s turned Truman’s Containment Policy upside down; he wants to contain America and spread Socialism.
Unlike even Democrat icons like Wilson and FDR, he sides with detainees and their sympathizers.
His idol Lincoln freed the slaves …and he wants everyone dependent on government. Jefferson despised monarchy… and Obama bows before a foreign king, literally putting his upside down and his down-side up, symbolically prostrating America before monarchical Islam.
Dick Morris: “Europe wants to reverse the American Revolution and re-colonize us and it sees in Obama a kindred spirit willing to do its bidding.”
I’ve often called him “Reagan-in-Reverse”, but he’s “Washington-in-Defeat”, too.
Whether its handing over car companies to unions or Speaking Truth to Itself or patting its widdle Fan Club Press Corps on the head for being such a Compliant Poodle or ordering state-run banks to hand out even more bad mortgages (blame ya’ later!), every day brings a new experience in Bizarro President’s Upside-Downiness.
For example, we’ve always tried as Americans to hand our children a better shot at a successful future; but now we’re forcing them to finance our todays by bankrupting their tomorrows. Upside down.
And in the concern of the hour, Socialist Medicine, we’re looking at overturning centuries of Western Civ.
For 2,500 years physicians have followed one of two possible paths. On one side, physicians make decisions to advance the good of society; their primary job is to protect the welfare of the state. On the other side, physicians devote themselves to the well-being of the individual citizen. In his “Republic,” Plato outlined the first position:
“… but bodies which disease had penetrated through and through [the physician] would not have attempted to cure … he did not want to lengthen out good-for-nothing lives, or to have weak fathers begetting weaker sons; — if a man was not able to live in the ordinary way [the physician] had no business to cure him; for such a cure would have been of no use either to himself, or to the state.” (emphasis added)
Hippocrates countered with revolutionary perspective. He placed the patient at the center of medicine. With one timeless axiom he guided Hippocratic physicians for the next 2,000 years: “Primum non nocere” — First, do no harm. …Patients want to know their physician is looking out for their well-being — not the financial interests of the state.
Government compassion sounds so noble. But under the weight of the exploding American debt, Washington will inevitably pressure physicians to constrain health care spending by limiting care. …Every American should have access to quality health care. But as government gains control over health care dollars, physicians increasingly become employees of the state. …
So the question remains: Who will we follow? Plato or Hippocrates?
More “Upside-Down” Syndrome…or Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness?
