Basin allegedly threatened to shoot the man’s wife and several bystanders.

A local man seen approaching in the background confronted Basin, knocked him out, then calmly told him to stop threatening people.

Police say Basin later pulled a knife and continued threatening people.

When officers arrived, he allegedly threw the knife into the ocean.

The same bystander swam out, recovered the knife, and handed it to police.

Basin was charged with two counts of first-degree terroristic threatening. Bail was set at $1 million.

Police say he has also been arrested in other assault and property-damage cases since May, and several people have obtained temporary restraining orders against him.

Sounds like another successful day connecting with voters on the campaign trail!

If that resume isn’t enough to justify a serious biography, what exactly is? The answer has nothing to do with literature. It has everything to do with politics.

Somewhere along the way, Rowling stopped being judged primarily as one of the world’s most successful authors and became a political litmus test. For some people, her views on sex and gender now outweigh everything else she has ever written, accomplished, donated, or inspired.

You don’t have to agree with Rowling to recognize what’s happening here. You only have to ask a simple question. When did we stop being curious?

One of the things that struck me during my conversation with Solomon (Schimdt, author of a new Rowling bio) was how straightforward his motivation really was. He wasn’t looking to pick a fight. He looked around and realized something that should have been obvious. How could the woman behind Harry Potter, arguably the defining literary phenomenon of the last thirty years, not already have a definitive modern biography?

Charles Dickens has biographies. William Shakespeare has biographies. J.R.R. Tolkien has biographies. C.S. Lewis has biographies.

But the author who created the most successful publishing franchise of our lifetime had somehow become too radioactive for many people even to write about. That should bother anyone who claims to love books.

As Solomon explained, understanding Rowling’s life helps readers understand Harry Potter itself. Her struggles with poverty, depression, rejection, and single motherhood weren’t footnotes. They shaped the stories. They gave us Harry’s loneliness, the Dementors that captured depression so vividly, and the recurring lesson that courage usually comes at a personal cost.

Biography isn’t an endorsement. It’s an exploration. Somewhere, we’ve forgotten the difference.

A petition to ban New York City Mayor Zohran Mamadani from a 9/11 anniversary ceremony has gained over 40,000 signatures, and it now has at least one celebrity supporter — Patricia Heaton.

On Monday, July 27, the Everybody Loves Raymond alum, 68, reshared a post about the petition via X. “Keep it going New Yorkers,” Heaton wrote.

People were divided in the comment section, with one person advising Heaton to “stay out of politics,” while others supported her stance.

As Globe previously reported, the petition was created on July 9 by Giovanni Galante, who lost his wife in the September 11th attacks.

A SpaceX intern once described eating lunch next to Elon Musk in the company cafeteria.

The intern said Elon sat down at a regular table with a regular tray of food. No entourage. No reserved section. He sat next to two junior engineers who were clearly terrified. One of them was explaining a problem with a valve component to the other.

Elon listened without introducing himself or interrupting. After about three minutes he turned to the engineer and said “have you tried running it at a lower pressure gradient first.” The engineer stared at him. Then realized the CEO of the company had just casually solved a problem his team had been stuck on for a week.

The intern said what happened next was the part that surprised him. Elon didn’t leave. Didn’t check his phone. He spent the next twenty minutes asking the engineers questions about their work. Not CEO questions about timelines and budgets. Engineering questions about fluid dynamics and material stress tolerances. He was genuinely curious. The cafeteria conversation was indistinguishable from a technical review.

The intern said he understood in that moment why people work 80-hour weeks for this man. Not because he’s inspiring. Not because he pays well. Because he’s the only CEO in the world who sits in the cafeteria and solves your engineering problem between bites of a burrito.

People follow leaders who are above them. People worship leaders who sit next to them and prove they understand the work better than the people doing it.

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: muchos kudos to the esteemed Mr Musk, for all he is and all he does. We’re fortunate indeed to have him.

Search for “traitor” on X this week, and one man will flood your timeline: Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

The reason? Shocking images of thousands of migrants from Morocco crossing the border and flooding into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. The head of the association that represents Spain’s Civil Guard officers in Ceuta told the Associated Press that the border had “totally collapsed.” After watching video footage of migrants breaking through fences to get into the city, one would be justified in using the word “invasion” to describe what’s happening. Indeed, Santiago Abascal, the leader of the rising populist/conservative Vox party, called it just that and wrote that “Pedro Sánchez is its main promoter and guilty of all its consequences.”

Their gratitude to the Socialist prime minister is due to his mass amnesty plan, which received 1.2 million applications by its June 30, 2026, deadline. As I wrote in So, How’s Spain’s Mass Amnesty Working Out?, “Sánchez, of course, looks at every new immigrant as a potential future voter who won’t care about the mind-boggling corruption within his Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE). As increasing numbers of Spaniards take to the streets to demand the prime minister’s resignation, Muslim migrants are among his most loyal supporters.”

Elon Musk dubbed Sánchez something else: a traitor. After the prime minister defended his amnesty plan in April, Musk wrote on X, “Dirty Sánchez is guilty of high treason.” Sánchez responded cheekily at the time, “Mars can wait. Humanity can’t.”
