Cold Fury

Harshing your mellow since 9/01

A sad day

Heartfelt sympathy to our good friend Chris Muir on the loss of his dad. So sorry, Chris; when your dad goes, you can’t help but feel a little adrift and lost, and I don’t care who you are or how strong or tough you might be. Best wishes to you and the rest of your family, my friend. As I’ve said for years: don’t allow yourself to be embittered by what you lost. Instead, be grateful for what you had. Difficult as that is at times, it’s really the only way.

A tip of the ni…no, I can’t say it

Many, many thanks to our good friend Chris Muir for that smokin’ hot custom image accompanying the DBD strip in the sidebar. I intended to start running it horizontally in a sticky post up top, but had trouble getting the embed script to work for reasons I can’t figure out. So to heck with it for now; I just stuck it back in the sidebar the way it used to be until I can get things sussed rather than continue depriving y’all of his always-excellent work. Enjoy, y’all.

Update! Holy crap, are you kidding me? I try the horizontal embed code just one more time for shits and grins, and all of a sudden it WORKS? Jeez. Okay, clearly I have work to do here. And some more self-educatin’ right along with it.

Updated update! Okay, I’m leaving that image over in the sidebar as a link back to Chris’s DBD site. It’s just too good not to use. Now y’all get your daily dose of the funny papers right up top to start you off, and the added bonus of some…ummm…stimulating visuals in the sidebar to boot. Don’t anybody say I never did anything for ya, hear?

“Bereft of principles, it rests in peace”

Sheer perfection from Muir. Do note the URL too, which is, umm, worth a thousand words all by itself. Note, too, that Chris is the only person to have his own category here at CF, and has had for a long while. There’s a reason for that–many of them, in fact–and this installment of DBD would definitely be one.

Getting it straight

Not to wish ill on an old friend or anything, but it makes me so happy to see that Muir’s site redesign is being the total pain in the ass such things always are. After having battled so many like problems here over the years, it makes me feel a lot less lonesome.

Ahem. Just joshing ya there, Chris. Hang in there, buddy. Once it’s all done and working right, it becomes a fine excuse for a little celebratory hangover-generation. Trust me on that one.

Publick notice

I’ve been sadly remiss in not mentioning our friend Chris Muir’s annual fundraiser, which is going on now. Please help out if you can; Chris is for sure one of the good guys, and DBD has becoming something of an institution around these parts and elsewhere, and a most welcome one at that. I’ve been pleased and proud to run it here since the very beginning (back then the esteemed Mark Jaquith–now one of the WP coders and leading lights and another all-around Good ‘Un–had to help me out with some custom code to get it up and running properly on this particular site), and it would be sorely missed were it to go the way of the dodo. So as I say, do what you can to help out and see to it that that doesn’t happen.

Wolves, sheep, sheepdogs

GREAT quote from Muir in today’s comic:

DHS agent: Ma’am, I think you don’t realize we’re your greatest protection against terrorism.

Sam: You know what I think? I think YOUR greatest protection is Americans are slow to anger.

I think this government is one DHS, TSA, EPA, FBI, or SWAT raid away from a civil war.

Or a Department of Education one.

Fractured fairy tale

If you missed Muir’s cartoon yesterday, be sure to check it out here.

Once upon a time, Americans elected a Lightbringer, who promised toys, ‘n unicorns, ‘n rainbows, ‘n good things for all the little boys and girls who would vote for him!

To do this, l’il obama threw out a mean old Constitution, and children just like him everywhere cheered, because now THEY were in charge! 🙂

Now that’s some good stuff right there. And yes, this bedtime story has a very happy ending indeed.

Note to Muir

On today’s ‘toon: let ’em breathe, Chris.

Ahem. Sorry, but somebody had to say it. And it was always most likely gonna be me.

Give til it hurts

I have been remiss in failing to mention till now our good friend Chris Muir’s fundraising drive. Chris is one of the best of the good guys out there, and definitely deserves whatever support you can throw his way.

The first step

If you didn’t see this yet, you need to. I think he’s onto something here.

Update! Just had to transcribe this bit:

In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our Repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. Whether through his State or his Press, A President, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the President of a free people.

Ahh, but are we still truly a free people? That’s the question.

Updated update! Very much related:

With the acts outlined above, Obama and his regime have created a vast and rapidly expanding constituency of voters dependent on big government; a vast privileged class of public employees who work for big government; and a government dedicated to destroying capitalism and installing themselves as socialist rulers by overwhelming the system.

Add it up and you’ve got the perfect Marxist scheme — all devised by my Columbia University college classmate Barack Obama.

That’s the conclusion. Now go read the rest. As I keep saying, the only way to make sense of the wholesale destruction His Li’l Majesty has wrought so far is to assume the absolute worst about him. Then it all falls into place.

Fundraiser for a friend

Hey, folks, our old pal Chris Muir is now running his annual fund drive. Be sure to help a brother out if you’re at all able to. He’s one of the good guys.

And while we’re at it, the wife and I just got back from the doctor’s a while ago, where a sonogram was done, which I could make neither heads or tails of — quite literally, in fact; looked like sea anemones and coral to my old blind ass. But watch out, world: they tell me it’s a girl, which is actually what I was hoping for, no foolin’. Although I gotta say, everybody I know that has one says I’ll live to rue the day…

Note to Muir

Re: today’s strip: as the hot rodders say, injection is nice, but I’d rather be blown. You got the girl on the right track there, buddy.

Note to Muir

If you’re surrounded by people who look like Jan, and they’re all naked, you are most definitely not in Hell.

Ahem.

DBD Fundraiser

Not to impose on your generosity, Dear Readers, but our old friend Chris Muir could use a little assistance. Check it out, and do what you can for one of the Good Guys. As Chris says, “In a time of free content, DBD will live or die by its value to its readers every day, every month, every year.” That goes for this site as well, and for most of the other cogs in the Right Wing Death Machine. Help him out if you can.

Sweet success

Well, dang – judging by today’s Day By Day cartoon, I need to hold myself a fund-raiser here. And soon, too, given the post-holiday — uhh, make that “perpetual” — state of my bank account. Ahem.

Free quality content, with no annoying ads. Tipjar’s on the left, folks. Give till it hurts. Badly. 😉

Update! More on Chris’s fundraising effort here. Go help a brother out if you can.

More kudos

And re that last, damned if Muir hasn’t nailed it flat once again today. Way to go, Chris.

Write ’em

Ever wondered why a sharp, fresh cartoonist like Chris Muir can only be found online at his website, or on a handful of cutting-edge weblogs (ahem)? Ever groan when you see the latest tired, stodgy, uninteresting example of liberal groupthink from an old-guard guy like Garry (not Michael, as I had here earlier – no idea where that little brain-glitch came from) Trudeau in the funny papers with nothing at all in the way of equal time for a more forward-thinking view, one not completely fossilized in Vietnam-era amber?

Well, here’s your chance to let your dissenting voice be heard at last.
