Diamond Dave in the raw

February 2nd, 2008

Hey, at least he’s on pitch. Mostly, I mean.

As someone who has felt the pain many times, I can assure you that nothing is more mortifying than sitting in the recording-studio control room and having the engineer punch the “solo” button on the board to isolate the vocals from everything else, for EQ’ing purposes or any other reason. Always a completely hideous experience, no matter how good a singer you are. Or, y’know, are not.

Being a huge fan of VH Mk. I, and having enjoyed the latest incarnation on tour (aside from Eddie's crap-ass solid-state guitar tone,) I thought Dave did a bang-up job. I've been through the terror of the solo button plenty of times as well; although I'm sure it's much, much worse when it's your *voice* on trial.

I don't hear anything odd or off on this track. It seems to sound exactly like I remember, albeit a little dry which is understandable being a raw track and all. I'm sure for people unfamiliar with the recording process it's quite revealing though.
