There Is A Season
In order to respond to Sithmonkey’s post below, I want to do a seperate post. Slublog, over at Ace, posted “Ronald Reagan is Dead”. Go Read his post. My response to Slublog’s post is below the fold. I think it has bearing on what Sithmonkey brings up about the state of the conservative blogosphere, and I also think it has some relevance as to why the anti-war movement is the way it is today as opposed to forty years ago:
“This is a trend that politcal movements go into when they become tired and start running out of ideas. The Democrats experienced this in the 1970’s and 1980’s when they continued running on FDR’s New Deal and LBJ’s Great Society. They had nothing new to bring to the debate but ideas and programs that were played out. Instead of looking for new ideas and debating them to put forth a new agenda they began to yearn for the next JFK to lead them out of the wilderness and restore them and their ideas to relevance.
The desire for the next Reagan is the danger sign for Republicans, yearning for a Golden Age that never was. Reaganism is played out, because it won most of the major battles it fought and is now fighting for small advances using an inordinate amount of energy for small gains. In essence, we cannot return to Camelot, life and the world move onward. This is not the late 1970’s-early 1980’s and acting as if these times are is the ticket to irrelevance.
New ideas and proposals have to be advanced, new policy battlefields have to be located. A debate on future courses without engaging in purges against party heretics needs to be done and quickly. I don’t think we will do that before 2008, but it is possible to come up with new ideas before 2012.
Where do we want to go in the States and the Nation and what course will get us there?”
