History Shows Again and Again,

May 26th, 2007

No, it’s not Ted Kennedy after a tough night at the Monocle, followed by a tough early morning at Hawk & Dove.

It’s not Alec Baldwin, beefed up between acting roles and between child custody / child welfare hearings.

Nor is it Michael Moore after the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 1152, got through with him.

It’s the Son of Hogzilla.

The story is actually pretty incredible. Tough kid… Something tells me he’ll be enlisting in a few years, you just get that vibe that he’ll be seeking that sort of challenge. Reminds me of this crazy hardass little redneck kid I used to know, though that particular kid never shot a world record hog.’Course if it’s a photoshop, it wouldn’t be the first time some crazy little hardass redneck kid exaggerated the size of the game he took. Fish always get bigger and bigger after you catch ‘em… Did I ever tell you about this 18 point buck I shot? Okay, so you could only see 9 or 10 points in the photos… So maybe the kid is going to be a 71L…

Update (from Mike)! Aw crap – I edited this post, adding a link to the original story and downsizing the pic somewhat so as not to break the layout, and WP then automatically commandeered the poster identity, making it appear as if the post was mine own doin’s. Alas, no; the credit for this one goes to Al. Sorry about any confusion caused by my minor tweaking.

Update updated (from Mike again)! There — fixed ‘er. Sorry again about that, Al.

According to the article this came from, the adults had rifles on the pig the whole time - that could have killed it quickly if not instantly, just in case it actually tried to fight back - but instead they let it run bleeding for a few hours until it slowed down enough from the kid's pistol wounds, that he could catch up to it and put one into its head.

I can understand hunting to the extent that it serves some utilitarian purpose, like putting food on the table or controlling populations that otherwise would cause real ecological damage with excessive numbers, but my understanding stops at the point where the prey is allowed to suffer needlessly. Even hunters who do it purely for sport normally make a conscientious effort to kill prey in the quickest and most painless manner possible.

In this case however hours of suffering were apparently deemed to be justified by the need to let the boy feel like he killed the pig himself.
