Surrendering in stages

And suddenly, Blair’s spine disintegrates too:

Iran and Syria can be Blair’s ‘partners for peace’
THE first cracks in the united front over Iraq between Tony Blair and President Bush appeared last night as the Prime Minister offered Iran and Syria the prospect of dialogue over the future of Iraq and the Middle East.

Mr Blair said that there could be a new “partnership” with Iran if it stopped supporting terrorism in Iraq and gave up its nuclear ambitions. Syria and Iran could choose partnership or “isolation”.

Translation from the liberalese: There can be a new partnership with Iran if it makes an empty promise to give up terrorism while continuing on sub rosa as it always has. Liberals will buy it, because they’re cowardly and stupid and it allows them to continue living in their happy little 9/10 bubble. When the bubble gets blown up, they can still blame Bush for it. End of translation.

And speaking of Bush, Allahpundit draws some cold comfort from this not-quite-a-cave-in-yet:

In an annual foreign policy speech, Blair suggested a “new partnership” was possible with Damascus and Tehran that included making clear how they can help in the region while warning them of the consequences of hindering peace.

But Bush told reporters at the White House that Syria must get out of Lebanon and Iran should abandon its nuclear ambitions.

Oh really? Why, exactly? From where I’m sitting, I can’t see one good reason for them to. Despite what the Chamberlain Left likes to endlessly bleat, “rejoining the community of responsible nations” is hardly incentive enough — or at all.

He pointed out that the United States had offered direct talks with Iran about its nuclear ambitions if Tehran would agree to stop uranium enrichment, though Iran has refused.

Translation from the RINOese: we tried kissing their asses, but they wouldn’t let us.

A timely if futile reminder: umm, hello, George? “No negotiation with terrorists”? “Axis of Evil”? Remember that stuff? You were right then; you’re wrong now. And the rest of us will be the ones paying for your error.
