L’arena – Malkin and Esmay
Dean Esmay calls Michelle Malkin out:
I’m publicly calling out Michelle Malkin, someone whom I often disagree with but usually respect. I hope she will think about it and respond thoughtfully and not angrily or flippantly.
There is a grown-up debate to be had about the incompatibility of fundamental tenets of Islam and liberal democracies, and about the prospects for reform in the Muslim world (Max Boot makes a histrionics-free go at it in the LA Times, which I will come back to soon). I will waste my time no further with trivial distractions. I make no apologies for highlighting the horrors of sharia law, criticizing creeping dhimmitude, and citing the work of outspoken and brave critics of Islam–Muslim and non-Muslim alike. (Speaking of which, don’t miss Jihad Watch at Hot Air TV today.)
I will not submit to hysterical boys who cry “Islamophobia!”
You gotta see this one for yourself…
Update! Holy crap! A blogosphere first, I think: Darth and I just posted on the same topic at almost the same time. I deleted mine and am just gonna say this: start here, then go here, and here, and here. Some worthy ideas being discussed, passionately and thoroughly, which is as it ought to be. But for my money, Bill’s distinction is the crucial point: it’s all about liberty, not democracy, and if most of Islam is compatible with it, it sure as hell seems as though most Muslims aren’t.
