Bravo! Couldn’t've said it better myself!

In an earlier online editorial accompanying the publication of the cartoon, Mr Ramm had taken a strong line in support of free speech. “[The Liberal] will not be coerced into self-censorship by the threat of violence from those who use a platform of free speech to call for the destruction of the very system that enfranchises them,” he wrote.

“The Liberal – a publication first launched in protest at the strictures on freedom of expression – will not collude in the downfall of a tolerant, open-minded and pluralistic philosophy, and we lament, as WH Auden did in 1938, that: ‘You talked of Liberty, but were not just; and now your enemies have called your bluff; for in your city, Only the man behind the rifle had free-will’.”

…and then Brave Sir Liberal turned tail and fled.

Looks like all that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that the liberal media be put in charge of guarding against it.

Update! Charles Krauthammer spits out, and I mean spits out, the sick-making truth about the Islamist bullies and their pusillanimous appeasers both. But of the two, it’s the cowards of the Western media who are the more despicable. After all, they’re the same ones who’ve spent the last several years telling us all that the WoT is a sham, that the threat from radical Islam is not real, and that it’s all America’s fault anyway. Well, now we see just exactly how much freedom of speech is worth to the yellow-bellied dastards, and just how much their support in any conflict really means. With every passing capitulation, they prove over and again that the worst any of us has ever said about them is no more than the simple truth.

I would echo your sentiment, Mike, but these poor sods are in England, where self-defense is a defacto crime, and firearm ownership is, of course, nearly impossible. To make it worse, their police force (references to Scotland Yard in the article) pretty much declared that it would not be doing it's job of protecting their right to free speech, or life, or anything else, for that matter.

So they're stuck with it, unfortunately. In their position I would have done the same, but then, I wouldn't have been in their position to begin with. Had I the terrible misfortune to be born an Englishman after 1945, I would have on my 18th birthday applied for emigration the U.S.A.

At least a new Italian law declared that even killing intruders in your own home or workplace with firearms is OK...

It's time for the old question again: what to do when the state can not/wants not to protect its citizens?

What now? Can you expound on that a bit, FabioC.? Is Italy going the way of Florida, presuming innocence in self-defense?

If you rely on the Gov O Mint to protect you, Shame on you. The MIBs say the Police have NO DUTY to Protect you. I hope this will change with Alito. There must be a REAL threat here! What do they keep here?

    RR,

I don't know much about Florida law. The Italian rules of self-defense are based on the "proportionality principle" - that in the application of many judges meant that people defending their homes were sentenced to worse penalties than the actual burglars.

This new law estabilishes that the use of lethal force and weapons is always proportionate to defend one's own home. And in Italy it is possible to own rifles and handguns, even if they have to be registered and the whole thing must obtain police authorization.

Excelellent, FabioC. That is rather similar to Florida's law, except Florida's law goes a bit further to protect someone defending themselves or their property, even their vehicle.

    BOMB BRAZIL!!

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - While the world community scrutinizes Iran's nuclear plans, Latin America's biggest country is weeks away from taking a controversial step and firing up the region's first major uranium enrichment plant.

That move will make Brazil the ninth country to produce large amounts of enriched uranium, which can be used to generate nuclear energy and, when highly enriched, to make nuclear weapons.

Brazilians, who have long nurtured hopes of becoming a world superpower, are reacting with pride to the new facility in Resende, about 70 miles from Rio de Janeiro.

Is there something about even attempting to stay on topic that offends or otherwise really, really bothers you, Zorro?

But since you already derailed the conversation here, I'll go ahead and say that I'm happy to see you finally at least tacitly admit that you're supportive of the insane Islamic fascists in Iran -- undeniable supporters of global terrorism -- becoming a nuclear power. Nice to know whose side the Left is really on in this whole thing.

Not that we didn't already, of course.

Or is it that you're just test-driving the latest nutjob moral equivalence: Brazil=Iran, Tehran=Rio de Janiero? Because when most people think of Carnivale, I doubt they get mental images of dead bodies piled one on top of the other as occurs at the annual stoning-of-Satan hajj ritual. But by all means, keep it up: nothing like a little clarity in an election year, and just because you aren't capable of making even the most obvious and elemental ethical distinctions doesn't mean that most Americans can't either.

Well, with Zorro consistently making his arguments so easy to counter, you really gotta admit that it's a little like Sammy Sosa playing T-ball.
