Obama’s dictator pal issues Obama-style threat

July 18th, 2009

When you can’t persuade people into accepting your original bad idea, just bluster and threaten your opponents; it’s the Chicago Way, transplanted to Honduras:

Zelaya, who was forced into exile in a June 28 military coup, gave negotiators meeting in Costa Rica until midnight to restore him to office, threatening to return to Honduras in secret and attempt to retake power on his own if no agreement is reached. He indicated he would reject any power-sharing agreement, a proposal to be discussed at the talks.

“If at that time, there is no resolution to that end, I will consider the negotiations in Costa Rica a failure,” Zelaya said at a news conference Friday night at the Honduran embassy in Nicaragua. “I am going back to Honduras, but I am not going to give you the date, hour or place, or say if I’m going to enter through land, air or sea.”

He did not say what steps he would subsequently take. But earlier this week, he said Hondurans have a constitutional right to rebel against an illegitimate government. His foreign minister, Patricia Rodas, said Thursday that if the talks failed, Zelaya would return to Honduras to install a parallel government “to direct what I will call the final battle.”

“A constitutional right to rebel against an illegitimate government” — which is exactly what they did, and shipped Zelaya’s sorry, power-grubbing ass right the hell out, exactly as they should’ve.

Actually, they did err somewhat: Zelaya ought to be cooling his heels and nurturing his tyrannical ambitions in a Honduran prison right now, awaiting trial and eventual execution for high treason. Then again, that would have given Obamandias an opportunity to paint his megalomaniacal confrere as a martyr, and issue the usual threats demanding his immediate release. When confronted with the duplicitous machinations of tyrannical swine like these two peas in a pod, there really is no perfect option for dealing with them.

Captain Ed notes the dilemma for our own Dictator In Training Pants:

Could Zelaya return to foment a rebellion? He’s got enough support at home to make that a real possibility. It doesn’t take a majority or even a particularly large minority to make a successful revolution, after all. The military would resist it — strongly — which could make this a bloody mess. The real problem for Honduras isn’t a rebellion, but an invasion of Nicaraguan and Venezuelan troops to put Zelaya back in power and back to being a Chavez stooge.

If that happened, eyes would shift immediately to Washington to see how Barack Obama would react. Will he make clear that the US will brook no foreign military involvement in Honduras, and back it up with a show of force in Central America?

You gotta be kidding. Ed’s conclusion demonstrates that he does indeed recognize the sad truth: our Supreme Leader has repeatedly demonstrated that he’s reflexively opposed to people living in freedom under a constitutional government. He’ll ignore the pleas of the Honduran people and their legitimate government for assistance, just as he has in Iran, and won’t lift a finger to resist the reinstallation of his fellow communist despot to power. The absolute best we can hope for is that he won’t commit US military resources to assist somehow in the restoration of this shameless thug.

The USSSA: friend to dictators, enemy of freedom. What a disgraceful pass.

Update! Note well, too, how the AP propagandists repeatedly refer to the defense of Honduran democracy by its entire fucking legitimate government and military establishment as a “coup,” which it most certainly was not. They’re backing up their Dear Leader’s craven support for this dictator by presenting his warped spin as accepted fact. Like I said: disgraceful, and a sad, sorry pass indeed.

Ed is not the only one who has realized what could happen. In fact several on the net are wondering why his thug friends have not already invaded and beat back "the coup".

As of now, I haven't seen anyone willing to bet one way or the other, but as far as Obama, your right. He won't do anything other than praise the fact that the "rightful government" is back in power.

Sad. Sadder still that America will be shamed once again in the world's eyes.

When and how will this all end?
