The Repubs MoveOn

November 17th, 2008

In precisely the wrong direction: leftward to the future, GOP comrades!

Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia, poised to ascend to House Republicans’ No. 2 leader this week, said the Republican Party in Washington is no longer “relevant” to voters and must stop simply espousing principles. Instead, it must craft real solutions to health care and the economy.

“Where we have really fallen down is, we have lacked the ability to be relevant to people’s lives. Let’s set aside the last eight years, and our falling down in living up to expectations of what we said we were going to do,” Mr. Cantor told The Washington Times in his district office outside of Richmond. “It’s the relevancy question.”

Oh, sure. Because what the remaining conservatarians in America want to see most is the (further) promotion of the idea that the government needs to be a lot more active and involved in our lives. Which, after all, is what the “pragmatists,” along with their progressivist partners, really mean by “relevancy.”

It’s a new day a-dawning, all right.

Update! This is more like it:

While Republican strategists and Beltway blowhards convene VIP retreats and meetings and save-the-party parties, the road to GOP redemption starts right now. There is opportunity to be seized right now. There is a line in the sand to be drawn.

Right now.

The first step toward GOP redemption is to stop the automakers’ bailout and roll back the creeping conversion of the Crap Sandwich 2.0 into an all-purpose bailout bonanza for every last American industry and corporate special interest in financial peril. The second step is barbecue Naked Emperor Hank Paulson and the Federal Reserve over their refusal to disclose how they are dispensing billions of dollars in loans.

John McCain screwed this up. The out-of-touch Republican leadership in Washington screwed it up. And let’s be honest: Too many of the same tired old faces now trying to reclaim seats of power — like Newt Gingrich — crumbled on the massive banking bailout and capitulated to Reid/Pelosi/Paulson/Bush when steel spines were needed most.

We’ll see if the RINOs carry the day and continue the fight against bitterly clinging to principles they persuaded the GOP to effectively abandon long ago anyway.

Updated update! I think it’s high time we begin to considering switching our party allegiance, folks. To this. It’s certainly a party I can, umm, get behind. And the conventions ought to be a scream. And perhaps a moan, too.
