The fix is in

October 1st, 2008

Well, well, well, well, well:

My dictionary defines “moderator” as “the nonpartisan presiding officer of a town meeting.” On Thursday, PBS anchor Gwen Ifill will serve as moderator for the first and only vice presidential debate. The stakes are high. The Commission on Presidential Debates, with the assent of the two campaigns, decided not to impose any guidelines on her duties or questions.

But there is nothing “moderate” about where Ifill stands on Barack Obama. She’s so far in the tank for the Democratic presidential candidate, her oxygen delivery line is running out.

In an imaginary world where liberal journalists are held to the same standards as everyone else, Ifill would be required to make a full disclosure at the start of the debate. She would be required to turn to the cameras and tell the national audience that she has a book coming out on Jan. 20, 2009 — a date that just happens to coincide with the inauguration of the next president of the United States.

The title of Ifill’s book? “The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama.” Nonpartisan my foot.

Anybody surprised in the least? And as Glenn says:

DEMANDING A SARAH PALIN PRESS CONFERENCE: Sure, bring it on — right after Obama takes questions from Bob Owens, Stanley Kurtz, David Freddoso, the Powerline guys, and Hugh Hewitt on the Bill Ayers/Annenberg business.

Why McCain/Palin is still bothering at all with the mainstream press remains something of a mystery to me, although I suppose there must still be some residual (and wholly misguided) trust on McCain’s part for his erstwhile pals in Obamedia. He should’ve learned by now what most of us knew all along: that they’d keep their eyes on the prize, holding their noses and being moderately supportive of His Maverickiness only until any and all real conservatives were dispensed with in the primaries, and the more liberal/socialist Democrat anointee came along, at which point they’d drop McCain like a bad habit and go all out for their Party’s man.

If McCain had came out swinging against the liberal media from the start and worked hard at exposing them for the Social Democrat propagandists they are, things might look a lot less grim right now. The public’s confidence in the integrity of the LLMSM is at an all-time low, and a large number of conservative and even independent Americans would have welcomed some real, no-punches-pulled straight talk about their dishonesty and corruption. But he foolishly allowed himself to be caught in the trap they set for him, and has nowhere to go now but right down the drain. His folly is going to cost us all dearly.

Update! Via The Other AP, Greta Van Susteren says: “In law, this would create a mistrial.” Well, sure. But the liberal media is a law unto itself, and they habitually change the rules to suit themselves and their candidates.

Ifil is actually one of the better lib journalists. But her own professionalism should tell her that she has a financial conflict of interest, even aside from her personal preference. Somehow lib journalists never get that when it comes to themselves.

Anyway, don't get discouraged by polls. They're usually wrong--on purpose. I think our gal will do well tonight. And more good news: Steyn is back!
