Not that we didn’t know already.

Get ready to shatter all your idealistic illusions about how government works.

HAHAHAHAHAHA! Damn, that’s funny. You gotta…wait, what? You’re SERIOUS?

A forthcoming book called The Confessions of Congressman X, purportedly written by a sitting (and rumored to be Democratic) congressman, promises to be an anonymous revelation of everything terrible you’ve always suspected about America’s representatives in Washington.

They have a few quotes from the book, which I’ll let you click on over to read. They’re exactly what you’d expect, if you know anything at all about what kind of government we really have. I’ll content myself with lifting just one here:

It’s far easier than you think to manipulate a nation of naive, self-absorbed sheep who crave instant gratification.

Oh, I don’t know about all that, seeing as how I think it’s pretty damned easy–so easy even a professional politician can do it.

If you have journalistic instincts kindly help a reader. Perhaps I speak for other readers, as well, when I say that we like a good scoop but don't like "digging dirt." I get that the writer of "Confessions" wants to remain anonymous. I get publishing his (or her) memoir through a vanity press affords absolute control. I don't get the wisdom of disclosing on the book's Amazoncom page the following fact about the writer: "His identity is known only to his editor and confidant, Robert Atkinson, the former chief of staff and press secretary for two Democratic members of Congress." How difficult would it be to link Robert Atkinson to only two un-named members of Congress -and have a 50/50 chance of identifying the likely suspect? I mean, this is very amateurish publicity, if my reasoning has merit.
