Corruption and criminality: the two Universal Constants of the political world.
Yes, all of it, everywhere.
Leaked files from a Panama law firm that creates shell companies show that politicians, criminals and celebrities worldwide have used banks and shadow companies to hide their finances, according to a series of reports by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists.
Within hours of publication, the divulgences prompted a parliamentary vote of confidence in Iceland, a curt denial from Argentina and ridicule from a close confidant of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The consortium said it had obtained a cache of 11.5 million records outlining the creation of more than 200,000 offshore shell companies. The trove includes offshore companies linked to 12 current and former world leaders, as well as hidden financial dealings by 128 more politicians, public officials and entertainment celebrities, according to the ICIJ.
Just the tip of a very large iceberg, as we all know. Which is why this amounts to a dog-bites-man story, and will be quickly forgotten, if it hasn’t been already. Amazing what we’ll put up with from our masters while they heap ever bigger burdens–more taxes, zombified economies, Muslim terrorist “refugees,” etc–on us against our will and ensuring they themselves will never be affected by any of them, innit?
MADISON, WISCONSIN—You’ll have to forgive me, but it was the weekend, so I didn’t manage to get through all 11.5 million files that were leaked regarding who was stashing how much money where around the globe. But I read enough to know that a whole massive amount of the world’s financial and political corruption got dumped onto the Intertoobz, certainly enough to give more weight to the possibility that every political system in the world—even the nakedly authoritarian ones—is hopelessly rigged, and that the marvelous new world of the miraculous global economy is an even bigger thieves’ paradise than you, me, or even Jamie Dimon thought it was.
Via Bill, who adds:
Note the careful omission, by the writers of this piece, of the richest, most powerful, and most corrupt government on the face of the planet: The United States and the Ruling Class Oligarchy which controls it. Of course, this is liberal rag Esquire. If a Republican were in the White House, they would have found a way to work something about that into their first graf.
Well, yeah. Because that’s diff’runt.
