10 Things You Didn’t Know About The A-10 Thunderbolt II

Well, I knew ’em; some of y’all might not. But the pics are cool as hell either way. Probably one of the most successful CAS platforms there ever was, or ever will be. I used to see these things flying over Myrtle Beach all the time when I was down there for Bike Week every year, almost always in pairs out over the water, and I’ve always loved ’em.

  1. Here’s a few more facts for ya…

I used to see these things flying over my house when I lived in Germany in the 1980’s. We lived about 20 miles from the Eastern Bloc (former Czechoslovakia). They flew low enough I could practically see the whites of the pilots’ eyes… pretty sweet.

  2. A-10s were initially an unwelcome addition to many in the Air Force as most pilots switching to the A-10 did not want to because fighter pilots traditionally favored speed and appearance.

Unfortunately, that part is just bullshit. Nobody else wanted them, and every hog driver I’ve ever talked to loved his job. Nobody “switched” to the A-10. Flight graduates selected their assignment preferences and were stuck where needed, just like has been done since ever. And I’ll bet more than a couple of them were plenty happy to get a hog as opposed to becoming a FAIP or worse.

It was a great platform for the era it served in. These days, with advanced, cheap and plentiful MANPADs and SAMs, that era is over. Which is why CAS is much better handled by a B1 these days.

There’s likely a small gap where something very small and fast could fit in, like the Scaled ARES or a similar flying gun. Good luck getting something like that built with current realities, in any branch.
