If you like your plan, you can keep it. Period. Except when you can’t.
Is it really puzzling? Really?
Well, let’s see if we can lift the veil of mystery. For starters, Obama’s statements were not ”narrowly untrue.” They were broadly, knowingly and entirely untrue. He repeated them over and over again, often straight into the camera. It’s nice that Greg Sargent concedes now that the president “could have been clearer.” But “could have been clearer” implies that he was a little clear about how this would work and just didn’t clarify enough. The truth is the complete opposite. He wasn’t even deliberately unclear. He was clearly dishonest. Obama was stridently deceitful. Seriously, watch this video compilation of Obama’s repeated and vociferous statements about “keeping your plan” and tell me he was just failing to be sufficiently clear that millions of people wouldn’t be able to keep their plans…
Indeed, what is so infuriating to many of us is that now that it’s the law of the land, Obamacare supporters act as if all of the lies were no big deal and no serious person believed them anyway. But as anyone can tell you, if Obama had been honest about the trade-offs in his signature piece of legislation, it would never have become his signature piece of legislation. So please, don’t tell me the lies don’t matter.
Indeed, this might help unravel the mystery. Republicans (or at least a great, great many of them) know that this law glided to passage on tracks greased with b.s. And not just about the ability to keep your plan and lowered premiums, but endless balderdash about extending life-expectancy, bending the cost curve, etc. When they pointed out that what the president was saying was flatly untrue, even impossible, they were called fools or racists. The liberal wonks who knew — or should have known — just how much b.s. was involved in the sales job, nevertheless kept their canons fixed on opponents of the law. And so did the “objective” journalists.
And now, when the Democrats’ lies are proving politically inconvenient, we’re told that if Republicans were smart, they’d accept the law and engage in a sober conversation about the very real trade-offs in the law liberals lied about for years.
After Jonah’s righteous indignation, Mike Walsh explains further:
What a surprise. Anyone who spent five minutes as a sentient adult during the late 1960s could have — and did — see that coming, because lying in what they consider a good cause is what leftists always do. (Think of it as “American taqiyya.”) For them, deceit in the pursuit of extremism — the “fundamental transformation” of a Republic that has lasted for more than two centuries, and was in any case not in need of transformation — is never a vice.
So who are they, these dung beetles in the bowels of the executive branch, Congress, and the regulatory agencies (come the counter-revolution, the “regulatory” agencies must be the first things that go) who constructed Obamacare from merely a gleam in its daddy’s speechwriter’s eye to a full-fledged nightmare? Who gave the country a crushing, coercive tax (John Roberts was right about something) that masqueraded as “compassion” and was sold through a series of bald-faced lies delivered by a popular pitchman who now takes no responsibility for what he has wrought? Congress is fond of holding sham, consequence-free hearings on various administration scandals — Darrell Issa’s long-running Capitol Hill sitcom starring Eric Holder as the punching bag is one of the best – so why not shine the lights on the regulatory basements and see what scuttles out?
Better yet, just lob in a bug-bomb, close and lock the door, and walk away until the problem solves itself. And lest any of you think Obama and the liberal-fascists give a single solitary damn about the millions of Americans who are now losing their insurance despite all of Obama’s lies to the contrary, you better think again: Ogabe actually went out of his way to see to it that if you like your coverage, you couldn’t keep it.
The Affordable Care Act as written and passed would have protected the grandfathered plans for a longer period of time and with more freedom for adjustment, but the Obama administration filled out the Secretary Shalls in such a way as to make that much harder, if not basically impossible, to do. The Obama administration’s original, June 2010 rules were actually even stricter, and would have, for example, made it impossible for an insurer or company to change the firms it uses to manage and administer the plan (which needn’t affect coverage and is a simple way to lower costs); those ludicrous restrictions were eliminated, but enough rules remain that it’s, again, near impossible to maintain a grandfathered health-care plan.
And that’s where we are now: millions of Americans are being forced by their government to buy something they don’t want or need, at great expense, in order to subsidize something that isn’t insurance by any traditional or meaningful definition of the word, but instead is a new entitlement–a wealth-redistribution scheme established by deception and subterfuge, enforced by a too-powerful central State that is in every way abhorrent to the standards for proper governance set by our Founders.
There, did I leave anything out?
God’s wicked sense of humor update! One of the most brazen–and hilarious–and inept–liars in Obama’s Cavalcade Of Lying Liberals trips over her own dick: Sebelius shamelessly claims the 404Care website has “never” crashed, not even once…and it was down even as she poked out her forked tongue to utter the words. Absolutely delightful, and very nearly too funny for words. Thanks for the horselaughs, guys. No, really.
