A non-STARTER from a non-entity

This is an Affirmative Action Treaty designed to weaken America and make Junior look like a grown-up.

This treaty requires nothing of the Russians because they don’t have much anyway. But it requires us to cut our stockpiles.

Since this is Obama’s claim to fame, he can’t allow the Russians to withdraw. They say they’ll withdraw if we deploy SDI systems. That means no robust missile defense. No backtalk on Georgian-type invasions. No nothing that upsets them.

They’ve painted Obama into a corner because this treaty is about his needs, not America’s.

Washington Times:

America will reduce its warhead stockpile, but the Obama administration has also unilaterally pledged not to modernize the U.S. nuclear force. This concession opens the possibility for Russia to achieve the kind of strategic technological surprise the Soviet Union did in the 1970s. The SALT I framework did not limit multiple warheads (MIRVs), in part because the United States felt it had an advantage in that technology. But the Soviet Union surprised America by swiftly developing superior MIRV capabilities in the 1970s, and within five years, the treaty had become a strategic liability enshrining Moscow’s nuclear superiority.

Under the new treaty, the United States and Russia agree to limits in numbers of warheads, but only the United States has promised to freeze its technology. This is an open invitation to Russia to modernize its way to nuclear dominance.

As for the previous announcement that we will not attack any country in compliance with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty–who decides if a country is in compliance?

“The new NPR appears to place the UN’s IAEA and its Board of Governors at the heart of determining U.S. nuclear deterrence strategy options,” e-mailed Mr. Payne, who has published several books on nuclear deterrence. …

“This question becomes central to U.S. nuclear deterrence policy,” Mr. Payne said in an e-mail to Inside the Ring. “A quick check will reveal that NPT compliance is determined by the IAEA’s Board of Governors a board made up of 35 states, including Russia, China, Venezuela, Mongolia and Cuba.”

START must be stopped.
