It seems that a series of California raids on places harboring ‘fugitive aliens’ or ‘criminal aliens’ – has netted a lot of aliens with serious criminal records, including a man wanted for murder, and a convicted child molester.
Ordinarily, these are classed as “criminal aliens,” a term of art that means they are very readily deported and removed from the United States.
Senator Ted Kennedy and Bob Menendez are insisting that criminal aliens now in the U.S. and even those under deportation orders, but not removed, be permitted to enjoy the amnesty they would grant under the bi-partisan immigration reform bill. That’s one of the major points they are holding out for, one which probably embarrasses some of the Republicans supporting the bill – but not enough to get them to stop supporting the bill, apparently. True, they aren’t saying “amnesty for felons.” The language they are supporting is along the lines of “amnesty for *all* illegal aliens.” They can say they aren’t supporting amnesty for criminal illegal aliens, but as long as criminal illegal aliens are a subset of all illegal aliens, that is precisely the effect of their legislative language.
I suppose that Lindsey Graham would call me a foaming-at-the-mouth-racist for pointing this out.
